In the plum capital of the Kolubara region, Osecina, young producers, in addition to “blue gold”, also see the prospect of growing other fruit species. In addition to plums, raspberries and blackberries, Ivana (29) and her husband Goran (31) Timotić planted blueberries on the family farm in the village of Ostružanj. At the beginning, there were 20 bushes, and now they have over 400 seedlings on an area of 14 acres.
This year, they expect a yield of 400 kilograms of blueberries
The first seedlings, says Ivan, were planted primarily for household use, but also to check whether this plant will be able to be grown in this area. It turned out that he could even after the check chemical composition of the soil they were expanding the orchard that had now reached the genus.
“When there was no work in banking I decided to work in agriculture together with my wife, who is a potter and plumber. I count, I put everything on paper, I deal by selling. They all planted blackberries, raspberries and plums, and we have 500 plum trees, but my husband wanted us to try to grow blueberries because it is not in our area. Our children love her, so yes we do not buy at least to them. I supported him and that’s how we started, “Ivana told us.
They are bringing this year’s harvest to an end and expect it to harvest close to 400 pounds blue fruits. They say they are satisfied with this yield, considering that the seedlings are in the third and fourth year of vegetation, and the average number of shrubs per kilogram of blueberries.
High temperatures affected the development and ripening of blueberries
This year it is noted by blueberries quickly bloomed which prevented them from doing certain treatments, but they are also visoke temperature affected the development and maturation of the fruit.
“At the moment, we are not able to ask safety nets since it is a very expensive investment, but we plan to do it next year, as it is already a larger amount pity it would be that if there was a city or some other weather disaster, everything would be destroyed. In addition, we plan to expand the plantation up to 1,000 seedlings which would be some 50 acres, but also for future producers in the coming years we sell our seedlings“Says Goran.
In the fourth year of growing blueberries, the investment pays off
Blueberries were mostly sold in fresh, while one part of the family of Ivan last year processed into juice. They sold most of this fruit on the territory of Osecina, and this year they also had buyers from Valjevo and Belgrade. Demand is said to be high but they could not meet everyone, because there are still quantities limited.
“We are satisfied with the price of five euros per kilogram, but there are also those who sell it for seven or eight euros, in Belgrade it is even more expensive. Since we are young producers and we entered the market for the first time, we did not go with a higher price, although we sold first class only, and we left the smaller blueberry for us. With this price of five euros, there are earnings, although we may not have covered all the investments yet, because this is only the third year. They say that in the fourth and fifth year repay what is invested so I hope next year will be net profit“, States Ivana Timotic.
