At the beginning of the visit, the Prime Minister told Chancellor Schultz that he greatly appreciates the courage and respect that the Chancellor is giving by actually participating in hearing the horrifying testimonies of Holocaust survivors. The Prime Minister emphasized that he is convinced that under the Chancellor’s leadership, Germany will fight with zero tolerance in the face of anti-Semitism. The Holocaust survivors thanked the Prime Minister and the Chancellor for the special visit here. They each told the story of their life and family during the Holocaust, about their immigration to Israel and the family they started here.
“An hour ago I entered the chancellor’s office and there was an honor guard of German soldiers waiting for me, who saluted the Jewish state. I thought about the first time my father saw a German soldier. He was almost 13 years old. In March 1944, he was lying in the big bed in his parents’ house. His father was next to him , because Grandma was in Budapest. At 5 in the morning there was a knock on the door. A German soldier came in. He said: ‘Where is Dr. Lampel?’ – That’s my grandfather. Grandpa got up. My great-grandmother, Hermina, who spoke German, approached the German soldier, knelt on her knees, she was already an old woman, hugged his boots and said: “Look, look, you also have a mother,” Lapid said at the beginning of his words.
“The soldier didn’t say anything. Grandpa went, got dressed, took his bag, approached my father, lifted the blanket, and father cried. He said to him: ‘My son, I will either see you, or I won’t.’ Since then he has never seen him again Today the German chancellor, the German army, the German state came here. To Villa Wanse, the place where the bureaucracy of evil was formulated, to honor you and to tell you that it asks for your forgiveness. We came here to tell them that we won. Grandfather Bella died in a concentration camp, but father survived. and started a family, and they started a country. This country is proud to be here today. I thank you, my friend, for coming here with us today. It takes a lot of moral courage for that. Thank you for coming,” he added.
The President of Germany that “I admit that you came here, it is not a matter of course. It is a shocking place. The work of memory in understanding things, preserving them and passing them on to future generations is the most important task. That is the importance of this place, the preservation of memory. Students come here, soldiers. I assure you that We will continue it at any cost, that is our mission. Shocking things are happening in Ukraine, people are being persecuted for being Ukrainian, we must always keep an eye open and help, always know the truth.”
Even earlier, the Chancellor of Germany said in a meeting with Lapid that his country is committed to fighting any phenomenon of anti-Semitism, “We have Jewish communities and we are proud of that.” Lapid, declared at the beginning of his words: “I am the son of Tommy Lapid, a Holocaust survivor from the Budapest ghetto, the grandson of Bela Lampel who was murdered in the Mauthausen concentration camp, and now I stand here on German soil – as the Prime Minister of the Jewish State.”
