MIAMI – The city of Miami is trying to accept Bitcoin in its business. According to Mayor Francis Suarez, it is a move that could bring profit in terms of attracting technology companies.
The city commission approved, at the suggestion of the mayor, that Bitcoin be used to pay city workers, and residents and companies to pay fees and taxes with cryptocurrency.
Suarez pointed out that Miami is striving to become a technology city, and is positioning itself as one of the most technologically advanced cities in the United States.
Although the initial step involves finding companies that will facilitate Bitcoin transactions, the mayor wants to invest limited amounts of budget funds in Bitcoin.
“I firmly believe that when (and if) Amazon and (or) Apple adopt Bitcoin as a payment structure, things will speed up because at that point we are talking about a very large volume of transactions that can use this cryptocurrency.”, Suarez said, adding that city officials want to be at the top and ahead of others when cryptocurrencies gain more importance.
