The Byzantine Church in Nahariya: the naked hunter, the peacocks and everything else – Israel

In the heart of the city of Nahariya, hides a Byzantine church whose mosaic floor remains intact and the decorations are among the most beautiful found in the churches of the Galilee.

The birth of the church in the Christian settlement in the Western Galilee in the 6th century AD, on the road between Antioch and Acre, a road paved by Nairon Caesar.

The church is of a large basilica type with three apse and an impressive 28 meters long in the large and complete mosaic floor and the spectacular decorations along with the interesting fact that it is built on a slope from west to east.

The entire church floor is made of mosaic and oyster decorations. In the center are two peacock decorations facing each other, including an amphora (storage jar for food / wine), and the other is a symmetrical and colorful rosette.

The preservation and restoration of the church was done with a donation from the community of Billipeld in Germany (a twin city to Nahariya) and the credit for opening the site last year should be given to Nahariya Mayor Ronen Marley and volunteers Eli Oknin and Roni Peled who will be happy to guide you.

How to get there: Abir Yaakov 15 Nahariya, at the end of the alley at the entrance to Katznelson School.
