The BMW iX Flow can change color at the touch of a button

BMW takes the technology from e-books.

From the brand that in 2008 gave us the concept car Gina, the fabric car that could “blink the eyes”, now comes a new innovation: a car that can change the body color with the push of a button.

During the CES show in Las Vegas, BMW presented the iX Flow concept to illustrate the technology. The car is clad in a type of so-called “digital paper” – the same type of material used in e-books.

The material contains million small capsules, about as thick as hairs. These are filled with negatively charged white pigment and positively charged black pigment. By conducting current through the capsules, you can control which pigment is to float to the surface, and in that way change the color of them.

In e-books, this technology allows you to create a screen that is similar to printed paper and uses only power to change the displayed image, not to keep it alive.

To dress an entire car with the material, it also offers several advantages, says BMW. Apart from the fact that the driver can use it to “express his personality”, a white car, for example during hot summer days, can help keep the car cool by reflecting off the sun’s rays. When it’s cold outside, a black car is better, for the same reason. This can give longer range, says BMW.

There are currently no plans to put the technology into production, but BMW is working on adapting it to different parts of the car, including the interior.

I want a car that can change color!
