the black year of cyber security

Each employee visits an average of 4 malicious sites a year, exposing their company to devastating hacker attacks: the data emerge from a research carried out by Ermes, a Turin startup that has patented a shield capable of blocking the most sophisticated spear phishing systems. This cybercrime has in fact marred the 2020 of companies, claiming illustrious victims such as Twitter and Italian excellences such as Enel, Geox, Luxottica just to name some of the most sensational cases.

The company founded by Hassan Metwalley analyzed over 86 million Internet connections generated by a sample of 361 employees from 13 companies operating in different industrial sectors. The data tells a scenario that sees the majority of companies exposed to threats that cannot be blocked by even powerful firewalls and traditional systems. Thanks to the Ermes observatory, it was possible to detect that in 93% of cases the “monitored” employees unintentionally reach potentially dangerous sites without being blocked. 91.97% exposed their data to web tracking systems while browsing. To add an important load in 2020, Covid-19 was put on at least two fronts: on the one hand, the massive use of smart working has weakened the defenses of companies; on the other hand it provided a strong theme as a bait to grab the attention of users.

“The pandemic has accelerated an ongoing process but the problem, unfortunately, comes from afar and derives in part from the habit of users to give up their data in exchange for apparently free services” emphasizes CEO Ermes Intelligent Anti-Phishing Hassan Metwalley. “Added to this is the evolution of hacker attacks which now 79% come from the web, causing enormous economic damage, which in 2021 is expected to reach the record figure of 6,000 billion dollars”.

Employees – and the browser they use to surf and work – are therefore the real Achilles’ heel of corporate networks, from which pass the theft of passwords and digital identities used in targeted attacks on businesses. This is where the Ermes Intelligent Anti Phishing system comes in, enhancing traditional web browsing filters. Not only on computers but also on smartphones and tablets, increasingly used to access corporate networks. The patented algorithms analyze the traffic of each user, protect it in real time and continuously develop new “antibodies” to prevent new attacks.

The Ermes system has no competitor on the market: it is fast, scalable and increases up to 97% protection from the aggressions that today bypass firewalls and other perimeter defense components through browser navigation of managers and employees.

An intelligent shield that at the same time improves the performance of the devices it protects, including smartphones, increasing speed up to 4 times with a 30% bandwidth saving.
