The birth rate in Hungary has finally jumped

In May 2022 7,581 children were born, 6.3%, 451 newborns more than a year earlier. With this, the birth rate returned to the pre-coronavirus range.

In the previous months, far fewer children were born, the cause of which was speculated by many, and it was mostly believed that the couple’s willingness to have children had fallen out of caution due to the epidemic and coronavirus vaccines. Characteristically, despite the beautiful data for May, the birth rate so far in 2022 is modest. In the last 12 months, 90,379 children were born, 1,835, 2.0% less than in the previous 12 months. This year, 7.3% fewer children were born in January – May, of which the number of births decreased by 11% in January – April and increased by 6.3% in May compared to the same period in 2021.

One of the most interesting issues is whether couples have actually postponed or canceled their childbearing plans. As the shock was very short-term, there is a chance that only the former occurred, and this may even mean that high data will arrive in the coming months.

In May this year, 9,984 people lost their lives, 11%, 1,201 less than in May 2021. The current value is already similar to May 2019, the last year before the epidemic. In the last 12 months 144,494 died, 7.6%, 11,874 less than in the previous 12 months. The number of deaths decreased by 16% in January – May this year, with the exception of February falling short of the previous year, with the largest increase in March – April, by 29%.

As a result of the favorable demographic numbers in May, the natural loss was 2403 people compared to 4055 in May 2021.
