The first contemporary generation of the Skoda Superb was launched in 2001, and today celebrates its 20th anniversary with more than 1.5 million units sold.
The contemporary first generation of the Skoda Superb, after the former eponymous model from 1935, was unveiled on September 11, 2001 in a rather particular context. Indeed, this infamous day coincided with the opening of the Frankfurt Motor Show 2001, which failed to attract the usual crowd in its aisles, following the American events.
Skoda took advantage of its recent integration into the Volkswagen group to borrow the Passat platform, which it lengthened by 10 cm to achieve a large road sedan : the new Superb was born. The launch powertrains included three petrol and two diesel versions, topped off by a 2.8-liter V6 offering 193 horsepower and mated to a five-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. The technological endowment was rich, and notably included bi-xenon headlights with headlamp washers, electric and heated front seats, automatic air conditioning or even color screen GPS navigation. In total, more than 136,000 copies of the first generation were produced until 2008.
Skoda Superb: a long tradition of high-end sedans
It was during the Geneva Motor Show in March 2008 that the Superb offered itself a second generation, which stood out for its innovative “Twindoor” double hatchback, as well as its station wagon version called Combi. It was produced in total at 618,000 copies, until 2015.
The third generation, still in operation today, was presented in Prague in 2015. It offers even more generous space, more fuel-efficient engines and still, state-of-the-art technology. It includes the adaptive DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control) chassis, parking assistance or even tri-zone air conditioning. For the first time, a plug-in hybrid engine has landed under the hood of the Superb iV: it offers 218 horsepower and a 100% electric range of up to 62 km.
In the space of 20 years, the Skoda Superb has sold a total of around 1.5 million copies. To date, the third generation has already passed the milestone of 700,000 units produced.
