The autonomy of the AirPods Max reflects the statements of Apple

An independent test shows that the battery life of the AirPods Max is similar to the statements made by Apple at the presentation stage and on the official website.

Apple says the AirPods Max last up to 20 hours with ANC and spatial audio active, but i test show that the headphones achieve greater autonomy:

In our test, we used fully charged AirPods Max and looped Apple Music’s Global Top 100 playlist on an iPhone. We turned up the volume to 75% with Active Noise Cancellation. The AirPods Max played music for about 22 hours, before shutting down and disconnecting from the iPhone.

Going into detail, after an hour of playback the battery went from 100% to 99%, then the line drops in a more linear way up to 22 hours.

Apple also claims that if you charge the AirPods Max for 5 minutes you have 1.5 hours of listening. The test resulted in 1 hour and 39 minutes of autonomy in playback after 5 minutes of charging starting from completely discharged headphones, so even in this case Apple’s claims are in line since the difference is only a few minutes.

As Apple also acknowledged in a support document released a few weeks ago, the use of the Smart Case makes no difference in actual use.

We tested both scenarios: leaving the AirPods Max out of the Smart Case and then inserting them into the case to see the differences in battery life. When leaving the AirPods Max out of the Smart Case for 12 hours, we have a 5% drop in battery life. We then left them 12 hours inside the Smart Case and recorded the same 5% drop. Battery consumption is approximately 1% every 2.5 hours. It remains to be seen how efficient the ultra-low power mode is, which Apple says starts after 72 hours if the headphones are outside the Smart Case and after 18 hours if they are inside the case.

Some users, however, are reporting several issues with battery life.
