The Army of Polish Design – Romuald Szeremietiew blog

At a press conference on October 26 this year. Deputy Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński and Minister of Defense Mariusz Błaszczak presented the assumptions of the law on the defense of the homeland. It is undoubtedly needed and we hope that the Sejm of the Republic of Poland will pass it soon. The act should regulate the functioning of the Polish armed forces. Finally, the repeatedly amended act on the universal obligation to defend the Polish People’s Republic of 1967 will be forgotten. It is a real shame that the Third Republic of Poland needed 30 years to legally regulate a sphere as important to the state as the armed forces.

What aroused great interest among commentators, especially those from circles reluctant to PiS, was the announcement of the creation of 300,000. army (including 50 thousand. Territorial Defense Forces, but “territorial” soldiers are also Polish Army). There were complaints that it was too much, convincing that Poland could not afford such an army and exhortations to ensure the quality of the army, modern armament, which in this case is to mean that the army should be small – Poland cannot afford large – professional and suitable for use on the modern battlefield. What will it be the different opinions expressed by the so-called think-tanki and military experts writing scenarios for future wars. All of them generally believe that the time of wars involving masses of troops, thousands of tanks and airplanes is over. Now there are to be conflicts with the participation of small armies of professionals-professionals using advanced electronic weapons, drones and robots, operating in cyberspace, rather “subliminal”, using information obtained by satellites operating in space, protected in “anti-access bubbles”, etc. , etc. In these visions and concepts there is no place for conscripted soldiers armed with rifles – hence the conclusion that training people in the use of weapons, and thus the preparation of reserves that can be mobilized in the event of a war, is unnecessary.

The “experts” agreed – there will be no war when masses of the army have to be used! Therefore, the announcement of 300 thousand. time army “P” is judged as harmful because it will only “waste of funds”, which can after all be spent on modern rockets and airplanes.

What Army

The question of how the Polish army should be, how many soldiers should be counted, how it should be armed and trained is really important, and the answer to it is difficult. Why? To begin with, it should be stated that although the armed forces of different countries generally have similar weapons, the efforts to develop military technology and the introduction of modern weapons are similar, it does not mean that the intentions of using the army are the same in every country.

Each country tries to build such armed forces that they constitute a security in the implementation of its own interests. Armies often differ in structure – in the US armed forces there is a type of armed force called the Marines, an army dedicated to protecting American interests in various regions remote from the US, while Switzerland has no Marines, and its armed forces are mainly territorial intended to defend one’s own territory. Question: is the Polish army to have a structure like the United States Armed Forces, or such as the Swiss Armed Forces (Schweizer Armee, Armée suisse, Esercito svizzero, Armada svizra)?image

Considering what the Polish army should be like, after determining what the interests of the Republic of Poland are, it is necessary to answer the question with what forces, how organized and armed we must have in order to defend these interests and what / who may threaten them.

From the end of the 18th century, Poland was in captivity for over a century, the Polish state did not exist. After regaining independence in 1918, the Republic of Poland, betrayed by its allies in World War II, functioned for half a century as the People’s Republic of Poland dependent on the USSR. Only since 1989 has it gradually regained its strength and its rightful position in Europe, step by step, but the threats to its existence, given Russia’s imperial ambitions, have not disappeared. So when determining what are the contemporary threats, it must be stated that the worst would be to lose independence again, and in an extreme situation also to occupy our state territory. Therefore, taking such a finding as the basis for considering the Polish army, it should be stated that Poland should have an army that would not be threatened by a repeat of the years of captivity!

There are opinions that the world has changed and Russia is no longer a threat to Poland, there is no need or willingness to conquer or occupy Poles in the Kremlin, because Russia can achieve its goals in Poland by means other than armed aggression. Of course, this may be the case – there are many threats to the security of the Republic of Poland, and not all of them have to choose the form of an invasion of foreign troops. But when we consider the directions of creating our own armed forces, we must take into account the worst possible threat and prepare our defense from this angle. If the worst does not come to the worst, so much the better, but if, despite the opinions convincing that war / occupation will not happen to us, it is better to be defensively prepared for it. When considering the issues of state defense, black scenarios are always taken into account, assuming that it will always be fine and nothing to worry about is simply unwise.
