On Wednesday evening, the State Secretary of the Slovak Republic for Sports Ivan Husár confirmed that Slovakia is in the game for the co-organization of the World Hockey Championships alongside Riga, Latvia, at the turn of May and June.
The championship was originally supposed to be hosted by Riga and the Belarusian Minsk, but the International Hockey Federation (IIHF) on Monday deprived the Belarusians of the right to participate in the organization of the tournament.
The President of the IIHF informed that there are three possibilities for the World Cup 2021 – the tournament will be hosted only by Latvia, or Riga will organize the championship alongside the Danish Herning or the Slovak Bratislava.
The Slovak Ice Hockey Association (SZĽH) has not yet confirmed any discussions with the IIHF on this topic.
According to Husár, Ladislav Križan, chairman of the board of the Sport Support Fund, who is also the director of the Administration of Sports and Recreational Facilities of the Capital of the Slovak Republic, Bratislava (STaRZ), has been negotiating with representatives of the IIHF and the city of Bratislava since Tuesday.
“However, there is also an interested party from Denmark. However, the organization of one group of the World Championships in Bratislava is realistic. Coalition negotiations on this topic have not yet taken place.
It’s very fresh, but the bubble would form very well at Ondrej Nepelu Elementary School, because the stadium is connected to the hotel, “said Ivan Husár on Wednesday afternoon during a press conference on financial support for sports.
So far, other world championships in ice hockey have taken place in Slovakia, in May 2019 they were also hosted by Košice together with Bratislava.
Previously, the Ice Hockey World Championships were held in the Slovak Republic in 2011. The IIHF canceled the championship in May 2020 in Switzerland due to a coronavirus pandemic.
