Stress blocks the formation of new neurons

In an interview for the newspaper Adevărul, he shows the role of stress in our body and how we can suddenly get sick. He also shows what defenses we can use to keep ourselves healthy

What are the mechanisms that trigger the disease in the body and what role does stress play in causing the disease?

Prof. Dr. Dumitru Constantin Dulcan: Stress plays a very unfortunate role. Stress is the body’s reaction to a trauma that can be physical, mental, emotional. Stress in the body has an effect on three essential structural elements: the neuron, the DNA, i.e. the genetic substrate of the body, and the immune system. As far as the neuron is concerned, stress blocks neurogenesis, the formation of new neurons or the formation of new connections. And here in our century we are talking about an ever-increasing frequency, an increasing morbidity of Alzheimer’s disease, therefore of the loss of intellectual capacity.

On the deoxyribonucleic acid, so on the genetic substrate: chromosomes have some proteins at their ends with a protective role, they are called telomeres. Stress acts on these telomeres, thus shortening them. More precisely, with each cell division, telomeres shorten, stress acts on them, so it simply reduces longevity, life span.

Five minutes of anger blocks the immune system for five hours

An example: there are data available to us from people who have dealt with the field of genetics, and who say that, for example, in the case of a mother who has a child with a chronic illness, it can be found at the telomere level that is 10 years older than the age in the bulletin. There are experiences that show that exposure to stress has this effect and, on the contrary, removing the individual from stress, together with a certain diet, can restore these telomeres. They are experiences of some scientists from the United States of America, going predominantly on the idea of a vegetarian diet.

And what happens with the immune system?

On the immune system – a five-minute stress, anger, rage can block the cells of the immune system for almost five to six hours. The immune system is that system of cells and organs that produce lymphocytes. They protect us from viruses and bacteria and do their job by constantly circulating in the body.

For example, dying cells must be removed. And in the body there are killer lymphoid cells, which include these dying cells, because otherwise they can fix on one place, create inflammation and from here we can wake up with all kinds of diseases, including cancer. Therefore, these cells medically called “NK” are extremely useful, they must circulate continuously in the body to be able to defend us against all those substances that are foreign to the body. Stress disturbs their efficiency.

You can’t avoid stress, but you can manage it

You said at one point that the modern world is subjected to enormous amounts of stress.

Technology has offered us many advantages, but at the same time it has exceeded our biological rate of adaptation. Look at what is happening in the mass media: all the news you follow only announces bad things. All this affects us. Beyond that, there are sufferings and troubles in the lives of all people living in this world.

But how to avoid this stress? There are a lot of problems that we face on a daily basis. Of course it is essential not to get involved. Emotional involvement in a negative phenomenon, in a TV news, etc. it consumes a lot of your energy.

You have to defend yourself by trying to detach yourself, that means self-education, knowing something about stress defense techniques and, of course, avoiding it. For example: you go to your boss and, if you know that he is going to make a scandal, already anticipate, try to be as indifferent as possible, put a barrier.

It’s one of the defense techniques. Of course you can’t completely avoid stress, because we live in a world where we want it or not, we also have stress. Each of us gets sick, someone dies, friends die, family members die, these are stresses that are inevitable, they are part of our biology.

Obviously, these are situations in which you cannot remain indifferent. Someone dies, you can’t laugh, it’s abnormal, these are things that belong to the nature of things, that’s not what we’re talking about. But I’m talking about the other cases, especially the stress caused by watching negative news, which someone pours down our throats for free, just so that some can gain an audience.

I think society should manage stress and there are many ways. I strongly believe: the condition is that the people who lead us have some notions of social psychology, so now they must have notions of economic philosophy.

But what can we do concretely?

Each of us must make the effort to change, first of all not to stress the person next to him, because the moment I stress the other, I implicitly stress myself.

This change must begin with each of us. So we need stress management at the social level, but also at the individual level and when we succeed in all these things we can then talk about health and a more or less harmonious existence.

Three poisonous dusts

What role does food play in maintaining good health?

There are three poisonous white dusts: salt, white sugar and white flour. No one wants to eat whole grain bread. Why do we eat white bread, which is drained of all the nutrients in it? Whole grain bread is the healthiest for our body. Smoking is also very bad, food additives that are added for preservation, dyes, all these things should be avoided.
