Thanks to Agricultural Irrigation, Simalungun Farmers Are More Intense in Cultivating – The Simalungun Regency Government, North Sumatra Province is currently focusing on the agricultural sector. One of the things being pursued is to build agricultural irrigation. Irrigation is believed to increase the fertility of the agricultural sector in Simalungun. Farmers also do not lack water supply for their agricultural cultivation.

Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo (SYL) explained that water is an important factor in the development of agricultural cultivation. Without water, the Minister of Agriculture believes that agriculture cannot develop optimally.

“In meeting the water needs for crops obtained from rainwater, irrigation systems or with surface water sources are the solution,” said SYL.

Director General of Agricultural Infrastructure and Facilities (PSP) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Ali Jamil added, irrigation is a strategic program in the context of irrigating land. Irrigation of agricultural irrigation must run well, because agriculture should not be disturbed by any factors.

“The existence of agricultural irrigation makes farmers not worried even though it is entering the dry season. Because irrigation will supply water, so that agricultural productivity is maintained,” he said.

Besides being important for the sustainability of the agricultural sector, Ali assessed that the presence of water can increase the Farmer’s Planting Index (IP). The existence of irrigation is also an important factor for farmers to increase their productivity.

“There are three aspects of the existence of agricultural irrigation, namely productivity, increasing the Agricultural Planting Index (IP) and increasing the welfare of farmers,” said Ali.

According to him, this is because irrigation provides a stable supply of water to paddy fields, so that the development of farmers’ rice cultivation goes well.

“Irrigation is water management. Irrigation functions to regulate water, both rainwater and groundwater. Irrigation can not only be used to irrigate land in rice fields, but also to support other activities,” said Ali.
