Test: Technics AZ60 TW – unusually adaptable

Technics is a brand under Japanese Panasonic that was probably better known at the time every home had a cassette player. Today, they are perhaps more famous for vinyl players for DJs than for true wireless headsets. In that case, a bit unfair, because Technics AZ60 TW has a lot to speak for them.

The design is not very eye-catching. Ear auger in a fairly large format with rubber studs for attachment to the ears. It is important to have the right size of earplugs for the music sound and noise attenuation to be good, and here it comes with rubber plugs in no less than seven sizes. If you usually have problems with the rubber plugs for true wireless being either too big or too small, the Technics AZ60 headset is for you.

Not only do you have great choices. Technics has an app you can install on your mobile, and it is recommended if you want to change the control of the earphones, the noise reduction, the call sound, the transmission of sound and a lot more.

If you look at the specifications for the Technics AZ60, the support for Sony’s LDAC technology stands out. LDAC is a transmission technology over bluetooth, which Android mobiles, not only Soyns has built-in support for. It provides significantly less compression of the sound than the standard technology sbc and AAC that Iphone uses does. The cost is shorter battery life. Technics states 4.5 hours with LDAC and 7 hours with AAC. Then, of course, it is also required that you listen to a sound source that is high-resolution to begin with. If you do, the music sound will be really good, although not quite on a par with the wow feeling you can get from the most expensive true-wireless headsets. If you like mammoth bass, the headset delivers. Personally, I prefer more natural reproduction than adjusting the balance in that way, but the reproduction is good even in treble and midrange. I can miss that the music does not pause when I remove the headset.

You must enter the settings in the app to be able to activate LDAC. This is because the function cannot be combined with multipoint, which is another nice function. This means that you can connect Technics AZ60 to two audio sources at the same time, for example work and private mobile, or mobile and computer. With LDAC on, you must instead disconnect from one device and connect to the other to switch.

The earbuds are controlled by touch panels that have a fast response and provide sound feedback to the registered pressure. The large snails prevent you from accessing the buttons by mistake.

The headset has active noise reduction, and by default you switch between noise reduction and listening, where you can make calls without removing the headset, by long pressing on the earbuds. The noise reduction is good without being fantastic. Above all, the headset removes a lot of noise already passively with the tight-fitting rubber plugs. Battery life is good even with the noise reduction turned on.

The voice sound is quite typical for true wireless headsets, ie good as long as you are in a quiet environment, and less good when you do not. The app has a setting called Justmyvoice that you can turn on and off for calls. The function filters out the background noise, but also affects the call volume so that it becomes strenuous for the person I am talking to to listen to what I am saying.

The overall impression of the Technics AZ60 TW is positive, with good music sound, good control, comfortable fit and extra functions such as simultaneous connection to several sound sources. If you want top-class call sound, however, you can turn to other manufacturers, such as Jabra or Sennheiser.
