TEST Peugeot 308 SW vs. Volkswagen Golf Variant – why the Golf is more beautiful

In the traditional C-segment, we find the Peugeot 308 one of the most beautiful cars. This applies in full to the station wagon version, the 308 SW. But is the Frenchman as beautiful on the inside as on the outside? And what about space? We compare the frivolous Peugeot 308 SW with the business-like Volkswagen Golf Variant.

Unlike in France, where the Break of Familiale had been regarded as the ideal family car since the 1950s, the station wagon in Germany retained the image of a pack mule for a long time to come. You only bought one if you had to transport a lot of stuff for work. Germany – just like the Netherlands – fell for the practical body shape much later. Yet it took until 1993 before the first Volkswagen Golf Variant came on the market.

If we were to give the past points in this comparative test, the Peugeot would have already taken a lead. The 304, a distant ancestor of the Peugeot 308, was already available as a Break in 1969. But in this test in which we assess the Peugeot 308 SW and Volkswagen Golf Variant on their interior and space, only the present counts.

Luggage compartment Peugeot 508 SW vs. Volkswagen Golf Variant

The striking, upright daytime running lights of the Peugeot 308 are still the signature of chief designer Gilles Vidal, who left for Renault in 2020. He takes credit for his work, because the 308 garnered a lot of praise for its appearance. But Vidal did not forget about usability. There is space for a minimum of 608 and a maximum of 1634 liters of luggage in the rear of the Peugeot 308 SW. That is slightly less than the soberly designed Volkswagen Golf Variant has in store. That only stops at 611, respectively 1642 liters.

Golf Variant offers passengers more freedom of movement than 308 SW

If we look at the space for the passengers, then the Volkswagen Golf Variant also has an advantage. In all directions, the Golf offers its occupants more freedom of movement than the Peugeot 308 SW. It’s not a world of difference, although the two centimeters of extra headroom in the back of the Volkswagen can make the difference between sitting comfortably and suffering.

Peugeot more beautiful inside than Volkswagen

The choice of materials and finish quality of the Peugeot 308 are at a higher level than in the Golf. Volkswagen can take that to heart. Older generations of the Volkswagen Golf excelled in this part. The Peugeot 308 SW scores even more points with a rear seat that folds down into three parts, while the Volkswagen Golf Variant has a handy folding passenger seat. Also nice: a high payload (543 kilos) and a high braked trailer weight (1400 kilos) for the Volkswagen Golf. The rider of the Peugeot 308 SW has to make do with 475 kg payload and 1200 kg tow weight.

No excellence in ease of use

In daily use, the Volkswagen is the most well-arranged car, in the Peugeot you suffer from the sloping roofline when turning. This restricts the view diagonally to the rear. Neither car excels in its ease of use. At Volkswagen, the clumsy sliders for climate control are still not illuminated and at the Peugeot the voice control does not work so well.

And the winner is …

In summary, the Volkswagen Golf Variant takes just a little more points on the test item Interior and Space. True beauty therefore lies within. That is, if you take objectively measurable criteria as a starting point. That is, centimeters and kilograms. When it comes to taste matters, in our opinion, the Peugeot 308 SW takes the highest score.
