What is My Little Scythe?
My Little Scythe is a competitive and family game inspired by the excellent Scythe to adapt the gaming experience to a more family and younger audience. The game takes the main principles of its predecessor by adapting the mechanics to reduce its complexity: Same type of central board, same type of individual board, same objective system and same constraint of choice of action.
For the record, the game was not designed by the authors of Scythe but by Hoby Chou who wanted to be able to play one of his favorite games with his daughter Vienna Chou. The prototype was originally called Scythe My Little Poney, then the theme was changed by publisher Stonemaier Games. No rainbow in sight on the set of My Little Scythe, but still pretty bright colors and illustrations that touch us and make us want to play. My Little Scythe is a trophy race for 2 to 6 players (with a solo variant) for games of around 45 minutes. The first who obtains 4 trophies, among 8 possible, wins the game.
On your turn, you can only take one action, and it cannot be the same as the one performed on your previous turn. The actions consist of Move, Research or Manufacture. A move action is fairly straightforward, with the ability for a player to carry resources with them or to move and drop their resources on spaces on the board. The Research action is what is similar to a resource production action, except that in My Little Scythe these resources do not appear on the spaces of your models, but on 5 different spaces of the board defined by a throw of dice. Each die indicates a resource and the color of the region in which it must appear.
Finally, the manufacturing action allows resources to be converted into something else such as spells, improved actions or pies. These pies are your combat strength that you can spend in a pie-toss encounter if your model is on the same space as an opponent.
When a player manages to have a 4th trophy, each other player has one more turn to possibly collect trophies before the end of the game. These trophies are also inspired by Scythe with combat conditions, improvement of the individual board, resources or quest completion.
We repeat, My Little Scythe has everything of a Scythe in addition to family, from its theme to the mechanics, through the strategic side and the sensations of the game. An excellent surprise that is essential to have for any fan of Scythe who wants to play with his children. It is also possible to play alone against a rather tough Automaton, or in teams of 2 to 3 players against 2 to 3 Automatons. This last variant makes it easier for children to learn the game without going directly to the confrontation against them.
The Cake in the Sky expansion
The Cake in the Sky expansion for My Little Scythe offers us 2 new factions, 4 new power tiles, 2 new quest cards and changes the end of victory condition to 5 trophies, but above all brings an airship to enrich the mechanics of game.
At the start of the game, each player receives a special ability for the airship that can either be their faction’s or randomly drawn. So now we have asymmetric factions, just like in Scythe. This special ability modifies the Search action which also includes a dice to roll for the airship. This allows you to move the airship on the board. Once the movement is complete, you have the choice of stealing a resource from the airship’s arrival square or activating your special ability. These abilities allow you, for example, to solve a quest, increase your level of friendship or pies, or even obtain resources. A good help to achieve certain goals more easily.
Note the availability of a very pleasant extension if you regularly play My Little Scythe to renew your games and have additional powers for your Kingdom.
