Test: Ikea Symphonic Lamp (2021) – speakers from Sonos

It is two years since Ikea and Sonos first introduced their collaboration, then in the form of two speakers: a bookshelf speaker and a combined speaker and table lamp. Since then, we have also had time to test the newcomer in the series, Symphonic Picture Frame, but now it is the speaker lamp that has come out in a new, color-improved version, which is also cheaper than the first lamp.

The most obvious change is that Ikea has filed for concept and appearance. However, the basis is the same and the idea with the entire Symphonic series is that you should be able to furnish more easily and decorate with speakers without them taking up unnecessary floor space. You should therefore be able to use the space you have, on floors, tables and in bookshelves more efficiently. The challenge, for Ikea and Sonos in this context, is to take advantage of the conditions to serve good sound. For speakers in unconventional formats, they are not the easiest to get good sound in, which we noticed especially with the Symphonic Picture Frame.

Sonos basically

The Ikea Symphony Lamp is basically a Sonos speaker, which means that you use the Sonos app to connect it and it also means that it connects to other Sonos speakers as part of a multi-room system if you want. There is thus support for playing any sound via Airplay from an Apple device, but the speaker lacks both bluetooth and Chromecast support. Whether you have an Iphone or an Android, however, you can play via the Sonos app and to it you can connect Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal as well as a number of different podcast and radio services, so most things can simply be played.

When we test Ikea Symfonisk, we do it from a mobile perspective with the premise that you use your mobile phone as your main source of music. In general, you can say that Sonos is a little behind in this area, precisely because they lack both bluetooth and Chromecast, although as I said, most of it is based on the Sonos app in your mobile. It is also worth noting that the speaker itself lacks voice control, but Sonos supports Google Assistant, so if you have a separate Google speaker, you can talk to it, or directly with your mobile for that matter, to control even The Sonos speaker.

To get started

It’s easy to get started and when I unpack the lamp, even though this is about Ikea, there is nothing directly to assemble. All you have to do is screw on the lampshade and plug in the cord. The lamp base is sold separately and you can choose a screen in glass or fabric. Both foot and screen are available in black or white, which means that there are more choices than with the previous model and overall this new one feels more refined and well thought out. You turn on the lamp itself with a small button on the front and on the back are the buttons for setting the speaker. The model I test is black with a black lampshade in glass. The lampshade is, you could say, double, in the sense that it is both a frosted white glass shade and an outer dark glass shade. The outer one is clear, unlike the outer one in the white version which is instead frosted.

Good price and good but not great sound

The sound in the speaker is nice without really impressing. It has clear both in scope and in terms of basic resources, and if we increase the volume, the dynamics will not keep pace. So there is no speaker that fills the whole room with music. Nothing you use to really enjoy music or rely on when it’s time to party. With that said, it is in terms of price, a good buy.
