Test de WarioWare : Get it Together, l’union fait la force sur Nintendo Switch

In line with the series launched in 2003 on Game Boy Advance, WarioWare: Get it Together! offers a slew of wacky and crazy mini-games, focused on cooperation – more or less effective – between players. Enough to pay homage to the party-games so dear to Nintendo’s heart.

With its family positioning, Nintendo has long established itself in the console party-game sector. On the sidelines of the series Mario Party, Big N fans were able to discover in 2003 on Game Boy the earthy Wario and his crazy adventures in the saga WarioWare. Almost two decades later, the evil double of the mustached plumber returns with his first title on Nintendo Switch. Direct follow-up to the events of WarioWare Gold released in 2018 on 3DS, Get it Together This time relies on cooperation between players to turn our brains around, in a crazy world that sometimes makes you dizzy.

The big bric-a-brac

With a story mode that looks more like a pretext than a real plot, WarioWare : Get it Together puts mini-games at the heart of its gameplay. Short (never more than a few seconds), ultra-rhythmic and completely WTF, they will ask you to wax armpit hair as well as to avoid a tsunami of vegetables, or even to empty a tube of toothpaste. If they do not shine either by their complexity or by their intelligence, the 200 available mini-games require real composure, and especially a sacred coordination.

Because it is there that lies all the difficulty of WarioWare : the frenetic chain of challenges is such that the slightest misstep is fatal. You have to act quickly, and above all with precision. The first minutes of the game are more frustrating than really entertaining, since by wanting to understand the mechanics of a game, it is generally too late. The defeats follow one another, but that’s ultimately what makes the flavor of WarioWare : play, rage, start over.

Under its air of anything big, however, the game has solid strengths. In addition to a very successful artistic direction, and a dubbing all in French, this new WarioWare is also betting on a few nugget-like games, starting with the Nintendo tribute level, which includes some of the most emblematic mechanics imagined by the video game manufacturer.

Family reunion without Mario

To add a little more pepper to the already spicy recipe of WarioWare, the title also offers more than twenty playable characters, each with its own gameplay. In addition to having to anticipate the various challenges of the game, it will be necessary to succeed in effectively exploiting the strengths and weaknesses of each to overcome the challenges offered. Unlockable as the adventure progresses, each of Wario’s sidekicks must be used at least once to complete the story mode, thus allowing players to familiarize themselves with the whole clique.

Despite explosive gameplay and characters that are not always manageable, it only takes a few minutes of trial and error to get up to speed. WarioWare. And rhythm, precisely it takes to keep up. Unlike its predecessor, Get it Together is not dedicated to rhythm games. However, you will need a balancing act to match the gameplay of the characters to the mechanics of each challenge. A perilous exercise, especially since the mini-games as well as the characters are selected at random from a restricted pool.

Unity is strength (or not)

It was one of the main strengths of Get it Together. While the first games in the series relied primarily on a single player game, the new WarioWare is fully playable in co-op. As well in the Story mode as in the Wariopedia and the various modes, it is possible to play up to 4 players locally on the same console. A luxury compared to the last Mario Kart Live: Home circuit, which required two consoles and two karts to be shared.

Too bad, union is not everything. The game is already difficult to master solo, the arrival of a second player in the equation often proves to be more counterproductive than anything else. Taken by the adrenaline and the speed, we quickly walked on each other. In reality, although multiplayer may not make our job easier, it contributes greatly to the big mess that is. WarioWare. Enough to ensure a few laughs in the evening, but also a lot of drama in case of defeat (and there will be).

This is, moreover, one of the only criticisms that we could make against Get it Together. While the game is openly positioned on local multiplayer, it must be admitted that it is more enjoyable in solo. After the first laughs, the difficulty of agreeing to several sometimes makes the gameplay counterproductive.

Fortunately, if Get it Together wants to be quite punitive on its gameplay, it is much less on ingame progression. Despite repeated Game Over, each level completed allows you to collect 1000 coins, the equivalent of 10 additional lives. Even if you are not really good, it is more than enough to link all the levels of the story mode in one go.

The game begins in the end credits

In WarioWare, it’s not the story that matters. The game also assumes its positioning, even if it means explaining to us that “the story is over, but the game has only just begun” before the end credits (which also constitutes a level in its own right). It must be said that with its lifespan of just over two hours, the adventures of Wario in the land of video games are more of an introduction than a real epic.

Once the main story is over, several game modes are available to us: it is thus possible to enjoy the various modes, the Wario Cup, or even the Wariopedia. Story mode levels are also accessible to improve previous records and stock up on coins.

In the various Modes, there is no longer any question of cooperation. Playable up to four players locally on a single console, this mishmash of challenges offers you the chance to compete against your loved ones in new mini-games, ranging from the Dueling Arena to the General Baston. For its part, Wariopedia will allow you to try your hand at all the challenges of the game, but also to unlock those that are still missing.

Because this is where the real interest of WarioWare. Designed for completists, the game is full of successes and additional challenges to overcome. In addition to unlocking all the characters and all the games, it will also be necessary to overcome more than a hundred specific Missions, while individually training your favorite characters to take them to the level of “Big Boss”. The most competitive will also be able to compete against the rest of the world thanks to the Wario Cup, a weekly challenge even more exciting than the rest of the game, which will allow you to win world ranking points.
