Tesla AI Day: Optimus robot prototype revealed, supposed to be under $20,000

Company Tesla announced the introduction of the Optimus robot prototype on yesterday Tesla AI Day (in our time zone today), and so it actually happened. The previously presented form was only a concept, and the shape of the robot so far is understandably somewhat distant from this form (as is the case with most concepts). Two variants of the robot were shown on stage, one was a working fully stripped down version called Bumble C that showed basically everything inside.

This development platform can walk and perform various actions on its own, and even performed a bit of hot dancing on stage. According to Tesla, this was the first time that the robot was not on an auxiliary rope to catch it in the event of a fall. It really has a long way to go to robots from BostonDynamics, but given the relatively short development time of the robot, Tesla has already come a long way.

In a video, Tesla showed how the robot manages some basic tasks, such as carrying a box around the office, watering flowers or rearranging objects from one box to another. The machine in full “nakedness” shows all its mechanics, including a computing machine with two fans. Here, Tesla uses the same computer that is also found in the automaker’s electric cars.

This “brain” also supports data connection via LTE and Wi-Fi, also takes care of sound and security. Here we also see 28 structural members for movement control, and the body of the entire robot has a total of over 200 degrees of freedom. A 2.3kWh battery with integrated electronics takes care of the power supply. With a consumption of 100 W when sitting and 500 W when walking quickly, this should be enough for the robot for a full day of work.

Also on the published data we can see that the originally estimated weight of 57 kg has increased significantly and is now 73 kg. Tesla also released data from the cameras the robot is equipped with and a visual representation of what it “sees”. We can thus see the image from three cameras, the segmentation of the image (the green man) and the conversion of our environment into voxels.

Among the samples presented was also a depth map (the orange-purple one above), i.e. a 3D space with the distance of objects displayed (closer objects are darker, farther ones are lighter). In addition to this “machine” variant of the robot, a variant that will approximately correspond to the final product was also shown. But she was not yet able to walk, so she had to be brought to the scene. According to Elon Musk, she should be able to walk within a few weeks.

Elon Musk further said that the target is mass production up to millions of series, which should allow the price to be brought down to very low amounts and he talked about less than 20 thousand USD. The big question is when this robot will even hit the market.
