Ternström: How much does it cost – really – to own a supercar – Chronicles

Many are amazed at how affordable it actually is. Buy your dream car already this afternoon.

This is a chronicle. This means that the content is the writer’s own opinion.

This is how much it costs, really, owning a supercar. I have owned a lot of supercars. I bought my first Ferrari already in the summer of 1999. It was a yellow 348 Spider. Just kept it for a few months before I switched to an F355 Berlinetta. Those were the days! The acceleration, the sound and all the attention the car got. I was 25 years old, single, and lived in Stockholm. My God, what fun it was.

You quickly get used to the attention. And all questions. Many people still want to talk to me when I am refueling, or when I have stopped for some other reason. There is always someone who is curious about the car and has a lot of questions. If I have time, I always answer every question politely.

The second most common questions? How much horsepower does it have and how fast is it?

Frequently asked question: How much does it cost?

The price of the car fascinates most of all. Therefore, I thought I would give you a unique insight into what it really costs to own and drive a supercar. I suspect you’ll think it might not be that dangerous after all.

In this example, we are buying an almost new supercar. I have set a budget at SEK 2.5 million. It may sound like a lot of money, but wait a minute and you will see.

For 2.5 million you get an insanely nice car. Ferrari 488 Spider, McLaren with complicated model designation, Porsche GT3, Porsche Turbo or Lamborghini Huracán Spyder. The money may even be enough for an Aventador. One of these, a couple of years old in perfect condition. A real dream car. Choose yourself.

The dealer you buy the car from helps you with financing. 20 percent must be submitted as a base plate, that is SEK 500,000. If we calculate three percent interest, 60 percent residual value and a contract period of 36 months, the monthly cost will be SEK 18,000.

If you can put SEK 750,000 in base plate, the monthly cost will only be SEK 10,000. Very many have extra loan space in their home that is used to borrow for the base plate with very low interest rates.

The tax on the car is approximately SEK 5,000 per year. Do not forget that it is one or two years old, registered before the terrible system of bonus malus was introduced.

Car service costs an average of SEK 20,000 a year. Unless you choose Ferrari, then it is actually free for seven years from new registration.

Furthermore, you must have a full insurance. This varies extremely much in price. With a little trickery, like putting all your insurance in the same company, you may be able to get down to SEK 20,000 a year. If you are unlucky, are young and live in a “no-go zone”, the insurance can cost SEK 70,000-80,000 a year. Tip! Check with your insurance company before you buy the car. Let’s count on SEK 35,000 a year.

Then you should of course drive the car. Let’s say 1,000 miles a year. We count on 1.8 liters per mile and then get 1,800 liters of gasoline. Sorry, Greta. With a petrol price of SEK 15, you have an annual budget for soup of SEK 27,000.

Last but not least, depreciation. Here it will be very difficult. The depreciation is higher on a Porsche or McLaren than on an Italian supercar. Some Ferrari models have almost no depreciation at all. Let’s not include it in the calculation. Instead, we assume that the car after 36 months is worth more than the residual value of the finances. If it is worth more than the residual value, you will actually get your money back. The entire depreciation is then included in your monthly payment.

Installment: SEK 10,000–18,000 / month

Fixed costs such as tax, service and
SEK 60,000 / year or SEK 5,000 / month

Fuel: SEK 27,000 / year or SEK 2,250 / month

Monthly cost: 10,000 alt. 18,000 + 5,000 + 2,250 = 17,250 alt. 25 250 kr

Tires are added, but these normally last over 1,000 miles. For the sake of simplicity, I do not have this cost.

Furthermore, you can deduct interest expenses in your tax return. I have not taken this into account in my very simplified calculation either.

There you have it. What does it cost, a month, to own a supercar for two and a half million. Many are amazed at how affordable it actually is. Buy your dream car already this afternoon.
