Selva Gardena. Tennis player Clara Tauson is on her way to living up to her top seeding in the ITF tournament in Selva Gardena in Italy.

The 19-year-old Dane won on Thursday afternoon over the Ukrainian Daria Lopatetska in two close sets with 7-6, 6-4 and is thus ready for the semi-finals.

The victory was expected against a player who ranks as low as number 702 in the world and had entered the tournament as a so-called “lucky loser” after losing in the qualifiers.

In the semifinals, Tauson will face either Taiwanese or Polish opposition in the form of the winner of the match between Joanna Garland and Katarzyna Kawa. Both players are ranked around number 250 in the world rankings.

Clara Tauson uses the W25 tournament to play for confidence and progress in the rankings, where after an injury-plagued season she has dropped to 130.

The framework for the matches is far from what the Dane has experienced in grand slams and major WTA tournaments.

In the humble hall of Selva Gardena in northernmost Italy, there is one row of benches along the wall that will do for spectators.
