A team of scientists from Columbia University, in New York, came to the conclusion that taurine – a substance present in the human body and in most energy drinks – has the ability to delay aging and promote a healthier life.

The Columbia University study began in 2012, the date on which scientists realized that, from the age of 60, the level of taurine in the human body was reduced by a third when compared to children.
The results in mice prompted them to go ahead with two more studies. In one of them, they worked with monkeys and reached the same conclusion, so they later moved on to a test on humans.
They studied about 12,000 Europeans over the age of 60 and found that those who took taurine supplements were less likely to develop obesity, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.
Now, scientists are asking for a large clinical trial to be carried out in order to understand these results more concretely. Even so, and because there are no concrete and clear answers, doctors advise against taking these supplements recreationally.
