Mihai Covaliu, the current president of COSR, was included, in 2013, in the Fencing Hall of Fame by the International Federation of this sport.
He became the first Romanian fencer to win a medal at two different editions of the Olympic Games, in the individual male saber event: gold in Sydney 2000 and bronze in Beijing 2008.
After the 2008 Olympic Games, he retired from competitive activity, becoming the coach of the national saber team.

Under his guidance, Romania won silver at the European Championships in 2009, in Plovdiv, then gold at the World Championships in Antalya, with Rares Dumitrescu winning silver in the individual event.
At the 2010 World Championships in Paris, Cosmin Hănceanu and the Romanian team won the silver medal, so that at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, the Romanian team finished in second place.
