T Phone review – Good on paper, but what can a phone for 1 CZK really do?

  • T-Mobile recently came out with its own phone
  • Its T Phone presents itself as a cheap and affordable device with 5G support
  • In fact, it is one of the cheapest 5G models on the market today
  • But is it worth buying, or would it be better to throw in a few crowns for the competition?

T-Mobile recently introduced two new phones with its logo – the T Phone and the slightly better-equipped variant T Phone Pro. Currently, this is the only operator that sells phones under its own brand here, and we had the opportunity to test the cheaper model of the pair. Two things play a role in it, namely 5G support and the price reduced to a minimum. But does this cheap phone for the undemanding in the strong and ruthless competition have any chance of survival?

Savings were really made everywhere

The effort to get the cheapest phone is already reflected in the sales package. This is because, like Apple, Samsung or Sony, it does not include a charging adapter, and in addition to the phone, you only get the necessary literature, a pin used to open the SIM slot and a USB-A / USB-C cable. It’s certainly a shame, but the price gnawed to the bone simply had to be reflected somewhere.

Slightly retro jacket and baroque frames

The T Phone is presented in a slightly retro guise and it reminded me most of phones Realm from two or three years ago. But it certainly doesn’t mean that he has a repulsive impression, not even by mistake, and he just looks like a stack of phones in front of him. There is a rectangular camera module on the back, which contains three sensors, an LED flash and protrudes only very slightly from the chassis, so the phone does not wobble in any way when placed on a solid surface. But even this retro jacket contains several pleasant, modern elements, and one of them is the fastening button.

The colored button is a nice detail

It is colored red, which makes the otherwise quite unified design pleasantly enliven, and I also praise its ideal location. It is really great in the hand (or rather on the finger) and contains an integrated fingerprint reader. It is, within this class, absolutely cool and unlocks the phone quickly, is accurate and reliable. In the ranks of modern and today’s very popular elements, we can definitely include the flat frame, which T Phone bets on and which again slightly moves the design into contemporary waters. What, on the other hand, knocks it hard into the deep past, are the giant, almost baroque frames around the display.

The frame under the display is huge

It still works on the sides, above the display, with both eyes closed, too, but the frame under the display is without exaggeration huge. This is really only seen on the cheapest phones and it is mainly this part that makes the T Phone look retro and slightly outdated. But the task was clear – to come up with the cheapest possible phone, at any cost. The phone earned a small and insignificant plus for IP52 protection, which means resistance to splashing water.

The display is miserable

Well, the display is similarly retro. The manufacturer opted for a panel with a diagonal of 6.52 inches, HD+ resolution (1,600 × 720 pixels) and IPS technology. Of course, there is no question of a higher refresh rate than 60 Hz, and this is a completely basic display from the lowest levels, below which there is nothing at all. Due to the low resolution, the grid is quite visible to the naked eye (269 ppi fineness is really not much) and the panel produces cool, even slightly washed-out colors. For a person used to the rich shades of the AMOLED panel, this display will certainly be a shock.

Basic modes are also missing

There are no color modes and no white color correction, so you’ll have to make do with how the panel is set up from the factory. Viewing angles are rather worse and the same applies to maximum brightness, so readability in bright sunlight is definitely not ideal.

The phone holds very well in the hand

However, the automatic brightness control works well and reacts to changes in ambient lighting surprisingly quickly. It is quite strange that the manufacturer equipped the phone with a dark mode, although due to the panel technology used, it will not have any effect on energy consumption, as with the AMOLED display.
