Szczepan Twardoch in response to the title “the success of the Pole”: I’m not Polish

Szczepan Twardoch, a writer from Silesia, was nominated for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD 2021) award for the English-language edition of his book “King”. “I’m not Polish”

Writing about the award for Twardoch, Wirtualna Polska entitled the article with words “The success of a Pole. The list of finalists has been announced”.

“Dear Editor of WP Books, it is not “the success of the Pole”because I am not Polish, I am Silesian, about which, I have the impression, I have already mentioned several times in public” – commented the writer on his Facebook profile.

The declaration caused a lot of emotions. Twardoch decided to respond to comments, which were a lot of hateful ones, by updating his entry.

EBRD Award

EBRD Literature Prize was established in 2017. Books translated into English and published by British publishing houses, written by writers from nearly forty countries in Central and Eastern Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, can be submitted to the award. The main prize the novels are fighting for is 20,000. euro and is divided equally between the writer and the translator. The authors of the books that will be on the two lower steps of the podium by the jurors will receive 4,000 euro. The same amount is credited to the account of their translators.

So far, no Pole has received the main prize, although there have been nominations. In 2019, “Doll” by Jacek Dehnel and “Drive your plow through the bones of the dead” by Olga Tokarczuk were nominated for the EBRD. In 2020, recognition in the eyes of the jury of “The Secret of the Helcl House” by Maryla Szymiczkowa (pseudonym of Jacek Dehnel and Piotr Tarczyński). The author of the English translations of all three books by Polish authors was Antonia Lloyd-Jones.
