Syrian President and First Lady spend Easter with nuns and orphans (VIDEO)

The President and the First Lady congratulated the Orthodox believers and nuns on Easter, and paid special attention to the orphans who are cared for by the monastery sisterhood.

The Monastery of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God was founded in the 6th century by Emperor Justinian. Today, this great shrine is under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Antioch.

The monastery has a collection of icons from the 5th to the 7th century, as well as a large library, which was visited today by President Assad and his wife.

The monastery also keeps the icon of the Most Holy Mother of God, which is believed to have been personally painted by the evangelist Luke.

The shrine suffered severe destruction during the war in Syria.
