Suara.com – Sanctuary is a Japanese series that has just been released by Netflix. This sports-themed series has 8 episodes, all of which were released on May 4, 2023.

Directed by Kan Eguchi, Sanctuary stars Wataru Ichinose who plays Kiyoshi Oze, a young man who joins the world of professional sumo for money.

The series title was chosen to represent Dohyo, a place where wrestlers place bets on their future, where outsiders are forbidden to enter this place.

Sinopsis Sanctuary

Sanctuary tells the story of Kiyoshi Oze, an outspoken young man who joins the world of professional sumo under the pseudonym Enno. He chose the profession solely for the sake of money.

Kiyoshi Oze is in debt and is in arrears in installments that inevitably has to be repaid. Living in a broken family, he often struggles with violence.

Kiyoshi Oze met master Ensho who was interested in making him a sumo player after seeing his talent and physique. But Oze has absolutely no interest in the sport.

Needing money, Kiyoshi Oze agreed to become a sumo wrestler. Yet he continued to be the target of criticism from sumo executives for his over-the-top personality and brash attitude to the sport’s traditions.

Sanctuary Player

Sanctuary stars Wataru Ichinose as the main character, Kiyoshi Oze. Meanwhile, master Ensho is played by senior actor Pierre Taki.

The rest of the cast includes Shioli Kutsuna as Asuka Kunishima, Shioli Kutsuna as Asuka Kunishima, Shota Sometani as Shimizu, Hiroki Sumi as Shizuuchi, Koyuki as Hana and more.

Reasons to Watch Sanctuary

Sanctuary received not so positive reviews. Sports journalist and sumo columnist John Gunning highlighted the series’ lack of correlation to the reality of professional sumo in several scenes.

Despite the negative reviews, Sanctuary is considered quite entertaining. The struggle of Kiyoshi Oze’s character, who initially joined sumo because of money until he finally respects the sport, is also a shame not to be missed.
