Summer scheme

It says: Darkabout Soković, executive partner for strategy and development, Propulsion

If I were to think strategically about my vacation, maybe the summer television schedule wouldn’t be so much in focus. In this way, it’s enough to miss a cheap reality show where the media, without fail, instead of deep piety, confrontation and forgiveness, every year when a star shines, they put together a program – it’s up to the thousands of unfortunate fates from the wars of the 90s – to give people not only a vacation, but also a (joint) aliveat all.

That accident is interspersed with many inscriptions that explain in detail where on Earth the Serbian tourist was stunned, harassed, cheated, tortured, deprived. I can easily identify with the sad fate of an unknown fellow countryman who this year also put all his cards (and money) on those seven or ten days, and now, damn it, that too has failed. Since it’s summer, there isn’t much news, so on television I carefully monitor how long the wait is in Preševo, how long in Gradina, and how long in Batrovci. I can’t wait for the star of the summer scheme to call from Horgoš, the respected Subotica name of the public media service – Tonand Bedalov!

However, despite the sea of information, it is not easy to plan the sea. In June, at the same time, it is too hot for me to think about work and too risky to put everything aside. In July, I blow and tell my loved ones that “summer is not what it used to be”. When he can’t breathe anymore, I also realize that it’s hard for me to imagine a vacation outside of Dalmatia, and yet I would like, like, something new and unrepeatable. In August, it starts to burn under my feet because everyone has already been somewhere (that’s what I need when I build a picture of the world from social networks) and then we always fall for a couple of days in September. And yet, how to plan when prices go wild (especially fuel), flights are canceled, suitcases get lost, and work is more unpredictable than ever?

The key, it seems, is to make a plan well in advance, at least three months before you hit the road. Psychologists say that the more distant something is in time, the more abstractly and decisively we can devote ourselves to it. This way, I can see on my example, the time for vacation is galloping closer, so where am I going, what am I going to do, in the end I almost don’t go anywhere. When he thinks about time, a person can fantasize about the enjoyment that awaits him there, and only just before leaving, he can let logistical problems come to the agenda. It seems like the only fair distribution of vacation challenges, so why not give it to ourselves afford?

Our law prescribes twenty (working) days of rest, but few people in a leadership position use it all. Take at least a full week, is the advice of HR and employee wellness experts like Dr. Art Markman of the University of Texas.

Both he and others explain this with self-evident truth: you’ll need a day or two to “detach” from your daily work routine, let the stress of emails and calls ease, and finally get some sleep. There is something in knowing that the return is not just around the corner, but that you are still on vacation the next day, and the day after that, and a day or two after that. Only such a vacation deserves to be called a vacation. Announce your departure to your colleagues and clients on time, so that they know who to contact in your absence, so that they can be sure that your work is certainly a priority, even when you are not there. This will allow you to not pay so much attention to the phone because you know that you have left everything (I guess!) in safe hands. And even if your co-workers can’t do everything by themselves, maybe you and they will be surprised by their qualities that they discovered when there were situations when you simply weren’t there. requested.

Finally, physical displacement is directly related to this. Don’t repeat my mistake! As my job requires me to travel all the time, the thought of a long drive, a plane flight or a nice hotel inevitably evokes associations with work and obligations, so the first few days of vacation I usually don’t go anywhere. Then I am overwhelmed by everyday little things that I never have time for: to go to the bank, to buy just this for the apartment, to wash the car, and so I end up tired from vacation. And when I remember at home that the blinds need to be replaced (there is a new one in the pantry), that there is ironing on the terrace or that someone should look at the machine because the centrifuge is making a strange sound, I would prefer to go back to work.

So that you don’t fall into the vicious cycle of staying at home like I did, remember that research also shows that a change of scenery is important.

Time off from work increases resilience and adaptability, making it easier for us to cope with the inevitable stress.

Vacation provides the perspective of new solutions for business and private problems and gives us the opportunity to achieve some other life goals, such as fulfilling time spent with family and friends or, simply, “to seemo of the world”.

I had the unusual pleasure of collaborating with Toni Bedalov on an important project. Then I saw that he carefully works on the quality of his reports all the time, and not just in the summer, when he shines on RTS programs. That’s how vacation should be: a serious undertaking that is carefully built all year round, and in the summer scheme only – quality realises.
