Such relatives, but so different. Test drive of Great Wall pickups – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

An interesting story is taking shape in Russia with Great Wall Motor. The company not only introduces Haval vehicles to the market, but also began the development of a new brand, GWM Pickup. As the name suggests, only pickups will be sold under this brand.

The first model on our market was the sturdy frame GWM Wingle 7, followed by the unexpectedly more luxurious and representative, if such epithets are applicable to trucks, the GWM Poer.

Both cars were presented to the journalists in the Moscow region, where they were tested in natural conditions for them – on dirt roads and off-road. As it turned out, these models are united only by the manufacturer and the body type, in other aspects the cars are completely different.

Wingle 7

The GWM Wingle 7 is a classic pickup truck. Appearance is not outstanding, but the car looks pretty brutal. The huge body, almost 5.4 m long, rests on a powerful frame, torsion bar front suspension, plug-in four-wheel drive and a rear axle with leaf springs. The dimensions of the body are impressive, it is longer in length than any pickup in our market – 1680 mm. The carrying capacity also did not disappoint – 975 kg. The compartment itself is covered with a layer of mastic and, in theory, should not be scratched from the transported goods.

On our market, only a long wheelbase machine with a two-row cab in the Comfort version is sold. This package includes a good range of options. This is air conditioning, and all power windows, and seat heating, and cruise control.

The Wingle 7 does not try to impress with the interior trim, but everything is done soundly and is in its place. The driving position is classic for this type of body. The steering wheel is adjustable only in height, the seat, thanks to the frame, is set high, but you can find a comfortable position.

The Wingle’s engine is the right one for a pickup. This is a turbocharged diesel “four” with a capacity of 143 hp. and a torque of 315 Nm. The transmission is six-speed, mechanical. Gear ratios are selected correctly, in city traffic you can use the 1-3-5 scheme and feel confident. The motor proved to be not only high-torque, but also economical. The average consumption of 8-9 liters of diesel fuel for such an impressive car is a praiseworthy result.

But on the off-road you need to be more careful. The wheelbase of 3.3 meters makes you be extremely careful. The clearance of 212 mm is sufficient, but the lowest point of the car is the particulate filter. You can easily damage it off-road, there is no protection. The off-road arsenal is represented by a rigid front axle connection and a lowering row in the transmission. Modes are switched on the move at speeds up to 15 km / h, which is especially important off-road. With fully utilized off-road capabilities, the Wingle 7 can only be stopped by landing it on the frame or reaching the grip limit.

On normal roads, the pickup behaves … like a pickup. The suspensions are stiff, the car bounces on speed bumps, and especially the rear. It is no coincidence that the organizers put several hundred kilograms of cargo in the bodies of the test vehicles. With a load, the car is noticeably softer and does not shake the soul on every unevenness.

GWM Poer is another level of pickup. The car looks attractive in appearance and the equipment is much better than that of its counterpart.

In the case of Poer, the company acted very cunningly. As a reminder, according to the requirements of the Moscow “cargo frame”, vehicles weighing more than 2.5 tons are prohibited from entering the city center and moving along the left lane of highways. However, the manufacturer indicates the vehicle’s carrying capacity of only 375 kg, which made it possible to pack the total weight of 2495 kg. This means that the owner of a pickup truck has every right to enter and park anywhere in the city without breaking the law.

Also, for the sake of legislation, the engine of the car was derated from 161 hp to 150, although the torque remained the same – 400 Nm. There will be no gasoline units in our market at all. Under normal conditions, the drive is rear, the front axle is connected via a multi-plate clutch. The gearbox is one, 8-speed automatic ZF.

The car has two configurations – Comfort and Premium. The latter can be equipped with a reduction row in the transmission, locking rear and center differentials, as well as the proprietary Torque-on-Demand intelligent all-wheel drive system manufactured by BorgWarner.

The passability of the car is limited by a ground clearance of 232 mm, the risk of damaging the bumpers on deep bumps, the capabilities of the tires and the courage of the driver. What we managed to make sure during the assault on the off-road section.

The Cooper’s road tires were washed out and the truck got into a rut, spinning helplessly with all four wheels. To be fair, many vaunted SUVs would never make it to this stretch of liquid mud.

At the same time, Poer proved to be excellent on public roads. In terms of habits on the asphalt, the car is similar to its sister Haval H9. The diesel engine is practically inaudible, the “automatic” works smoothly, the rolls are small, the car drives clearly and predictably.

The interior did not disappoint either. The cabin is spacious and comfortable to sit in both the front and rear. The chairs are comfortable, the adjustments help to find the optimal position. The center console architecture is similar to the aforementioned H9. The multimedia setup works smartly, the elbow rests on the adjustable armrest, and the two-tone interior trim adds coziness and premium quality.

Both machines have a clear division into consumer segments. The Wingle 7 is a simple, sturdy machine for those who need to haul loads on all types of roads. The price of a single complete set is 1,799,000 rubles. The closest competitor is UAZ Pickup, prices for which vary from 1,059,000 to 1,475,000 rubles. The domestic car does not have a good diesel engine, but the equipment is better.

Poer is sold in two trim levels. Comfort cost – 2,299,000 rubles, and top-end Premium – 2,449,000. The closest competitors are Isuzu D-Max, which costs from 2.76 million rubles, and Mitsubishi L200, prices for which start where Poer ends. Therefore, the market in the person of GWM Poer has received a strong player – for those who need a universal car and do not want to limit their comfort.
