We looked at what the French company’s inexpensive headphones with a microphone can do.
Founded in 2008, Subsonic is one of those companies that basically aims to satisfy the needs of players with its products. In addition to chairs, controllers, joysticks and steering wheels, the French company also offers gamer headsets.
The brand has been present in Hungary for some time, and we recently received one of their inexpensive headphones with a microphone. This model with the fancy name Subsonic GIGN, model number SA5580-G, can be purchased at a price of around HUF 15,000, so it is considered a really cheap device in today’s gigantic gamer selection. We were curious about what a device that looks like an entry-level device on paper can do, who it might work for, how comfortable it is, and of course, most of all, what its sound quality is like.
Nowadays, there are a lot of gamer headphones with especially bazaar design elements, but the Subsonic GIGN represents the more restrained line, which is also closer to our hearts. Both the speaker housing and the headband are black, with only a few bluish spots placed on it, which makes it look a bit militaristic. This is no coincidence, as GIGN is the abbreviation of the French counter-terrorist elite tactical unit, which also appears in the game Counter Strike, for example. (It’s like Videoton releasing a pair of headphones with the fancy name Komondor Kommandó.) There are no LEDs on it, which we don’t mind at all, and we think the overall effect is quite tasteful, so you can even wear them on the street without being stared at.
Unlike many of today’s headphones, it is entirely made of plastic, and no metal was even used in the headband. Speaker housings cannot be rotated or folded, so they are not among the most mobile products on the market. In the box of the Subsonic GIGN, we find only one instruction manual, so there is no cable extension or spare ear cushions.
