Street View is 15 years old. The cars drove 16 mil. km and captured 220 billion images. What interests Slovaks the most?

Google Street View is an integral part of Google Maps. Did you know he’s celebrating his 15th birthday this month? The first shots it contained were the streets of San Francisco and 4 other American cities. The service is now available in more than 100 countries around the world. Antarctica, for example, is also present and has entered space.

Street view in Slovakia

Google states in a press release that Slovakia has been a part of Street View for 10 years. The service also includes many sites or places inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, such as Ochtinska aragonite cave or Werewolf. The most visited country is Indonesia and the most popular site is the tallest building in the world – Burj Khalifa.

In 2014, the service in Slovakia expanded to many interesting locations. It is interesting that Slovakia was only the third country in the world after Japan and Poland with detailed shots of caves. The High and Low Tatras were mapped, but also Orava Castle, Bojnice Castle, Spiš Castle and the Museum of the Orava Village. A Street View tricycle and a Street View backpack visited these places.

A year later, several Slovak national parks, museums, historical monuments and places of rest were added. The last additions in 2020 were two alpine cottages – Zbojnícka and Téryho chata.

In 2012, the Street View backpack was introduced, which made it possible to better capture places where cars cannot get.
