Gerland: hospital students in southern Lyon want to be paid to screen
After the medical students of the faculty of Lyon east, the HCL call upon the medical students of the UFR of southern Lyon to ensure the samples at the Gerland screening center from January 18. But they don’t want to “be free labor.” Volunteers, yes, forced and underpaid, no ”, they explain in a press release. “When we were employed as nursing assistants in this crisis, we signed a contract. There, we also want to sign a contract and have adequate remuneration, like any professional, ”explains Roxanne Hellandso, representative of the elected officials of Lyon Sud. Students would like remuneration at least equivalent to the minimum wage. “Student volunteers for the Region’s screening campaign were paid € 150 per day,” also slips Roxane Hellandso.
The students dispute the “educational” argument. “Chain practice […] PCR testing is not part of the roles of the doctor, a role in which students aspire to be trained, ”they explain in the press release. “We are asked to give one week out of six weeks of internship when we already have very few clinical internships”, also emphasizes Roxane Hellandso.
