Stellantis has announced a strategy to electrify its models over the next decade, including a plan to update much of the catalog based on four battery-powered car platforms.
Opel is one of the 14 brands with the most ambitious plan, and the German company announced that it will have a fully electric offer on the main market in Europe by 2028. As early as 2024, all Opel models will be electrified.
For Opel, switching to electric cars will be key as the company also plans to expand into the Chinese market. Opel will therefore make larger cars closer to the premium segment. The first of them will be the Manta E in the middle of this decade, and the official sketch of that model has just been published.
A four-door crossover coupe is shown although the old Manta was a classic two-door coupe with a long bonnet.
Opel is already selling electric versions of the compact Corsa and Mokka models, as well as an electric version of the commercial Vivaro van, and will add its electric-powered variant by the end of 2021.
Stellantis’ new electric platforms are STLA for small, medium and large cars as well as STLA Frame, with an autonomy of 480km to as much as 800km. Most future Opel models will use the architecture for small and medium-sized models instead of the current CMP and EMP2 platforms,
