STB will no longer be able to carry out transport activities in Bucharest

The president of the Commission of transport and urban mobility within the General Council of the Municipality of Bucharest, the liberal Florin Melciu, draws attention to a terrifying perspective. According to him, STB will not be able to carry out transport activities in Bucharest and Ilfov from mid-March if no urgent measures are taken.

The contract for delegating the management of the local public passenger transport service concluded in 2018 between the Intercommunity Development Association for Public Transport Bucharest – Ilfov and STB SA is to expire on March 16. The contract establishes the framework in which the public transport service is provided within Bucharest and Ilfov County.

According to Florin Melciu, after 17.03.2021, STB SA will no longer have any legal basis for providing the public transport service. Although the contract was extended twice, 90 days each, between 18.09.2020 – 17.12.2020 and 17.12.2020 – 16.03.2021, it can no longer be extended as the legal provisions do not allow this.

STB will no longer be able to carry out transport activities. Which is the solution

“We are in an unprecedented situation, and its effects can lead to a real public blockade. Bucharest risks being paralyzed, and as a solution to the accident could be reintroduced maxi-taxi transport, a type of transport for which routes are not optimized, the traffic schedule is dictated by demand – their drivers waiting for cars to load and only then to leave, the embarkation or disembarkation of passengers is done in a chaotic manner, in the sense that they embark and disembark where it is most convenient, thus endangering their own lives or those of others, “said the liberal in -a post on Facebook.

For the future contract to enter into force, the approval of the Competition Council is required, and after the approval it is necessary to approve it by the local councils of the Municipality of Bucharest and the territorial administrative units in Ilfov.

Public transport in the Capital is going through a difficult period, after the pandemic affected travel by surface means of transport. However, Bucharest City Hall is considering renewing the fleet of buses, trolleybuses and trams.
