Prague – The Czech Statistical Office (CSO) today published the results of tourism and services for the first quarter of this year. In the last quarter of last year, three million guests stayed in domestic collective accommodation establishments, which is about 2.4 million more year-on-year. Domestic visitors predominated. In the fourth quarter of last year, calendar-adjusted sales of service providers rose by 12.8 percent year on year.

Two million Czechs stayed in collective accommodation establishments in the last three months of last year, roughly three times as many as at the end of 2020. Although foreigners accounted for one million arrivals, this was an increase of about nine times year-on-year. According to statistics, the number of visitors to accommodation establishments increased across all categories of accommodation in all regions.

In the whole of last year, 11.4 million tourists stayed in the Czech Republic, up 5.2 percent year-on-year. Compared to the ancestor year 2019, however, attendance was about half. In addition, even compared to the first pandemic year 2020, the number of guests from abroad decreased by 7.6 percent to 2.6 million last year.

Of the services in the fourth quarter of last year, travel agencies improved the most, with their sales almost tripling year-on-year. According to the CZSO, the reason was the low comparison base in 2020. For example, in air transport, sales increased by about 99 percent year-on-year. Double-digit growth was also recorded by gastronomes, who earned about 77 percent more. Accommodation service operators had sales approximately 135 percent higher.

Seasonally adjusted sales in services last year were 7.2 percent higher than in 2020, without adjustment by 7.3 percent. Compared to the pre-pandemic year of 2019, but excluding calendar effects, they fell by 5.2 percent.
