State Department threatened Russia with new sanctions “for violation of human rights”

The US may impose new sanctions against the Russian Federation for “violations of human rights.” State Department spokesman Ned Price said this at a State Department briefing.

He noted that Washington is closely monitoring the violations that “come from Moscow and take place on Russian territory.” The US will continue “to do this, whether in Russia or in another country where human rights are threatened by regimes that oppose these principles,” Price added, quoted by RIA Novosti.

We add that the Russian authorities do not agree with the point of view of the Americans. Moscow has repeatedly denied US allegations of human rights violations.

Let us remind you that after the protests on January 23 and 31, as well as on February 2, more than 10 thousand people were detained. Members of the Human Rights Council under the President of the Russian Federation (HRC) issued a statement in which they proposed to conduct official checks of cases of violation of the rights of journalists, participants in protest actions and security forces. In addition, the HRC expressed the opinion that it is necessary to regulate the activities of public observers at agreed and uncoordinated public events. Among other proposals from the HRC is to initiate a discussion on easing quarantine restrictions for public events. Members of the HRC were no less concerned about reports of allegedly overcrowded special detention centers.
