Sponsored: Get started with the most innovative features of Synology DSM 7.0

Synology’s network storage is the foundation of many home and business networks. The reliability and many possibilities of the products have made the company the market leader in this segment. Network storage is added to your network to conveniently collect files and access them from various devices: from your computer to your mobile, as well as from home entertainment products such as your television and audio equipment. In addition, nas devices offer many other functions, whereby tasks are taken off your hands because they can be automated.

Much has changed in recent years. On the one hand, we have started to use more and larger files. Just look at the resolution of the camera on your smartphone and the attachments with your e-mail. If you don’t throw such files away but collect them, you will have a huge amount of data over time. This applies both in business environments and at home. So the question is how to deal with this in a smart way. As a storage specialist, Synology follows the latest developments in this area and offers an enormous innovation with the arrival of DSM 7.0.

Synology DSM 7.0 is the basis of a huge innovation.

You can see this innovation not only in the graphical environment with which you operate all functions of your nas, but also in the completely new vision of the company. A vision where the nas remains the center of your storage needs, but also combines seamlessly with the cloud. With this, Synology is participating in the trend of hybrid cloud storage, as it is also used in large business environments. This blurs the boundaries between your physical NAS at home or at work and the cloud. With the new version, the company now offers Hybrid Share and Management from the cloud in addition to the existing C2 cloud variant of DSM.

Hybrid Share

The combination of a physical NAS at home or at the office and the possibilities in the cloud is an interesting thought. You can use things that are less easy to realize at home, and you can also set up your network storage in a different way. That is a bit more complex than a nas that is in one location. In a home environment you could imagine that the nas that is near your pc is a somewhat larger model with a lot of data. In your living room, you may want a smaller NAS with a fast, but quiet SSD for your media files. In a company with multiple locations, you can select the nas devices as needed. A small, simple NAS in one location, and a more powerful one in another, such as the head office.

It was previously possible to link cloud services to your Synology NAS. This way you can easily back up your NAS in Google Drive and / or sync files. With Hybrid Share, Synology goes a step further.

An example of a Hybrid Share configuration for the home

Above you will find an application example. You regularly work with media files and want to have quick access from your PC to edit them. Then you want to be able to use those files quickly outside the door. For example, to view photos and videos on the go or to show them to other people. By showing the files from the C2 server, you have the advantage of that server’s much greater bandwidth from the data center. You can then choose to add an extra nas to your network. For example, one near your television. You can then use this to quickly view your videos and photos or listen to your music. Thanks to smart caching, you can do this with a much smaller disk, for example a silent SSD. You can also realize a similar setup for a company.

In practice

Creating a folder for hybrid share is as easy as creating a regular folder. After linking your account you have created a hybrid folder and you can use the benefits of the C2 cloud.

The way the system works is a bit like how cloud storage services like the business version of Google Drive Desktop work. You will see all files in the shared folder on the network drive. However, they are not on your side yet. Once you want to use a file, it will be downloaded from the C2 cloud and stored on your nas.

When setting up a Hybrid Share folder, you must indicate how much space you want to reserve for the cache. At the moment Hybrid Share is still in beta. This means that the maximum storage in the Hybrid Share per account is limited to 1TB and that you can only create one Hybrid Share Folder. In that folder you can of course create subfolders to organize your files in a logical way. After the actual release, it will be possible to purchase a subscription with a larger capacity and it will also be possible to create multiple Hybrid Share folders per account. During the beta, use is free and you can see if the possibilities of Hybrid Share suit you. After registering for Hybrid Share, it can take a few days before you get access to this special new online storage.

When signing up for C2 Hybrid Share you have to choose whether your data will be stored in Germany or in the United States.

Creating a Hybrid Share folder works much the same as creating a standard folder.

On the NAS you can immediately see how much space is being used on C2.

You have to create an encryption key. It is very important to keep it. Without this key, you or Synology cannot recover the data stored on C2.

Keep the key safe!

When creating the folder, you must indicate the size of the local cache. It is smart to estimate the local cache a bit broadly.

Control through Active Insight

If you use multiple nas devices, you can lose the overview. Via Active Insight it is possible to get a very detailed picture of the devices. This way you can see exactly how intensively they have been used, but also how the ambient temperature is. Active Insight is a web environment and you can view it without having a nas device nearby. It is very useful for managing more complex environments with storage devices in different locations. You can also add triggers, so that you can monitor heavily loaded servers and intervene in a timely manner.

C2 Directory

Synology also expands the capabilities of C2 with C2 Directory with version 7 of DSM. This makes it possible to load users from Google Workspace and Office 365. It is also possible to manage the rights on linked PCs from C2 Directory.

Try out DSM 7.0 for yourself

DSM 7.0 is more than a coat of paint on the management environment of Synology NAS devices. Many more functions have been improved and adapted. Currently, its beta is available for the models listed below. You can download via this link. If your Synology NAS is not listed or you don’t have one yet, you can Try DSM 7.0 online here. Note: DSM is currently in the beta phase, which means that there may still be imperfections in the operating system. The release is expected in the second quarter.
