Speed bumps in the car will force Stockholmers to keep the speed

With a digital speed limit in the car, it will no longer be possible to drive too fast. Stockholm’s traffic councilor Daniel Helldén wants to introduce geofencing as soon as possible.

The most effective way to overcome speeding is to block the speed of all cars.

The technology for this is called geofencing or geostaket and means that the car’s speed is limited electronically to the current speed limit in certain (geographical) areas.

– With geofencing, there is no talk about it, you follow the rules. It would allow us to design the city in a completely different way. The city would be cleaner, more for Stockholmers, says Daniel Helldén to the local newspaper Mitti.

Using data from positioning satellites, such as GPS, the car knows where to activate the speed limit.

Geostacks can also be used for to completely stop unauthorized traffic, something that became relevant after the terrorist attack on Drottninggatan in Stockholm and which is now being investigated by the Government.

Today, the technology is not fully developed and there is no legislation for it, but Daniel Helldén does not doubt that it will.

– My vision is that all cars and trucks have this function, keep the speed limits. That they do not drive on the streets where they are not allowed to drive and so on.

BMW’s eDrive Zone system is a geofence that activates electric driving in environmental zones.

The geostaket is already being tested in several places in Stockholm. Among other things, a project with dynamic speed control is being carried out on Hornsgatan and Torkel Knutssongatan. This means that the speed limit is set based on how many road users move on these streets.

Sensors measure the number of pedestrians when it exceeds a certain level, the speed of the vehicles is reduced to 20 kilometers per hour. Five trucks used for goods transport in the area participate in the test.

A problem with the geofence is the precision. The speed bumps must be activated where the speed signs are.

– If it separates 30 meters, it becomes problematic. What is it then ?, says Robin Billsjö, acting head of unit at the traffic office, to the local newspaper Mitti.

BMW has already introduced a form of geostack in collaboration with the City of Stockholm, which means that their plug-in hybrid cars switch to electric operation when they enter an environmental zone.
