Space Elevator: Elevator for space

Scientists they have been dreaming of a space elevator for centuries, and those dreams were mostly a matter of science fiction. The new plans could make Space Elevator a reality, at least in the next century.

Within the project “Open letters to the next century“It simply came to our notice then letter which asks about the fate of the space elevator. It is already clear today that a lot of energy is needed to send things into space, so one of the central futuristic dreams is a space elevator – a long cable that would connect the Earth and a space station, and with the help of which transport to certain points in space was greatly facilitated.

The problem is that such a system would require lightweight and durable cable, so researchers from Peking University claim that they are found material which would make it possible, and it is about fibers that are composed of carbon nanotubes, which could in the future enable the construction of a space elevator system. Thus, the transport of materials and equipment into space would no longer require huge amounts of energy, and therefore no money. However, in order to reach the elevator that leads to some point in space, it is necessary to solve all technical problems, and one of the first is the amount of new material needed to construct the cable, and a shield that would protect it from space debris.

The creators claim that one a cubic centimeter of new cable can withstand more than 800 tons of cargo, which means it could transport about 160 elephants into space, if necessary. That is why this material is described as the strongest in relation to everything that could be seen before, and it is expected to have a wide application in the future, and even to enable the construction of the long-desired space elevator.

In the mentioned letter it is pointed out that the elevator will be an incredible leap into the unknown, which almost certainly means unpleasant surprises and potential disasters. The biggest danger is space waste – the eye 60% of the satellites currently in space are no longer operational, and so far it is about 16,000 pieces of large space debris moving at high speeds were detected. This means that it will be necessary to first solve the problem of waste from the 21st, in order to enter the elevator of the 22nd century.
