Sorin Cîmpeanu – A catastrophic visionary

The baccalaureate exam begins and 40,000 of the 140,000 students do not show up. Nearly a third is a failure in terms of school preparation. It is not about 40,000 rebels, but about 40,000 people with problems in the instructional-educational process. This black result appears on the background in which the Minister of Education announces all sorts of changes in the educational process. Some are not finalized, and will be removed only later from the hat of the former designer in the field of land improvements.

Sorin Cîmpeanu was rector of the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine in Bucharest. It is not my job to measure his merits and contributions for which he was also elected president of the National Council of Rectors of Romania (?). He had and still has all kinds of functions, but in terms of education he is insignificant, not to say non-existent. His work does not qualify him in the matter. That he was a lecturer, associate professor and professor at the Faculty of Land Improvement is something else. There, specialists are trained in a field, there is no education process, the specialty in the field of land improvements does not need the one in psycho-pedagogical disciplines. Education is a complex process, far from engineering.

Political reasons propelled Professor Sorin Cîmpeanu to head a ministry that he can manage more than project on new coordinates of progress. His Majesty could try to shape the earth and less so the young ones. And yet, during the term of Minister Sorin Cîmpeanu, the most spectacular changes in the primary, secondary and high school education process were announced. What is Sorin Cîmpeanu based on? On his experience as rector? On the activity of designer in the field of irrigation canals? May! For education, it does not go until a revolution in the field. He may have consultants and advisors, experts and directors who advise him, but the problem of understanding remains. Plus the presentation! Professor Sorin Cîmpeanu, like other ministers from the last governments, is the spokesman of the ministry he leads. He decides, he speaks, he appears in everything and everywhere. Unfortunately, he does not know how to explain, nor is he convincing.

Why are these changes in the organization of the educational process? Because his predecessors did the same thing and must he leave some new rules, which the next minister will cancel or mutilate?

Are theses and semester averages the cause of the low level of preparation of students? Or the fact that the teacher would have less autonomy in the activity of evaluating the student during the school year? More recently, would the quality of the student’s training and education improve if the stupid and mediocre classmates also received a reward? These crazy, lazy, egalitarian, progressive experiment ideas find enough followers and favorable opinionists. The number of grades will also be regulated in a completely different way, the holidays change according to the parents’ ski calendar, although our country does not have champions in the field and who knows how many practitioners. We don’t have much snow, we don’t have much slopes or the culture of some winter sports in such a way that the parents from the counties don’t step on their feet in Poiana Brașov or through Austria.

The Land Improvement Engineer believes that saving the low level of education by closing a single annual average, and theses will no longer be compulsory, and each teacher will decide how many assessments to make? In order to be more damn about the results, schools will have an electronic catalog, catalog that will eventually be printed and archived !?

In my opinion, all these changes are part of the “pretend to work” register. Minister Sorin Cîmpeanu wants to revolutionize a field he does not understand and he wants to do it through findings collected from other educational systems that fit in Romania how the Japanese language fits in the language of the land improvement engineer who became Minister of Education. Mr. Cîmpeanu puts his feet in a window like an elephant, trying to arrange the crystals and porcelain flowers with his horn.

A simple proof of the fact that Minister Sorin Cîmpeanu is next to the problem is the fact that his entire modernization program does not aim at the condition of the Romanian professor. It exchanges some obligations and some standards with others, but it does not aim at the modest condition of the teacher in our country. The educational disaster comes not only from the turmoil of the system, but from a terrible condition of the one who prepares the future citizen and the future intellectual or specialist. Poorly paid, despised by the state, parents and students, the teacher no longer does the profession with the same faith. Yes, I would say that many do it without any faith, like a chore. That’s how much I pay, how much I teach. That’s how much the Romanian state considers me, that’s how I educate students!
