For a few years ago Søren and Dorte bought an older house with a dream view of Kalø Vig. The plot is large, 2,200 square meters, and slopes slightly down towards the sea. The garden was nothing special, mostly lawn, for nothing had to disturb the view.
They built a new, modern, sustainable house with solar cells and geothermal energy, and in that connection, the whole garden was dug up, after which they made a decision. They would not have lawn again – they would have wild flowers – a flower meadow. When all the pipes for the geothermal heat had been dug down, the area was leveled, a layer of soil was laid over everything that was leveled and harrowed, and then 2 kg of mixed flower seeds were bought from DLF, Dansk Landbrugs Frøselskab – specially designed for this type of soil, which is clay soil. It cost DKK 2,500 and contained approx. 20 different well-known flower species. Of the annuals, there were, among other things, poppies, cornflowers and clods – the flowers that in the good old days were the most widespread weeds in Danish cornfields. In addition, a bunch of perennials: daisies, yarrow, blue flax, yellow clover and more. Everything was sown in October 2019.
The year 2020 became a shower of flowers. Never has so much and so admiring been looked at a garden as at Søren and Dortes. It was poppies and cornflowers that dominated and they bloomed all summer. When autumn came, it was all allowed to wither – nothing was done with the flower meadow.
