The purple tomato is one step away from being sold in US supermarkets and greengrocers. The genetically modified tomato has been approved by one regulator, but is still awaiting approval from another. According to the makers, the new tomato is good for health.By Eimert Prussia
The purple tomato was created by a group of British and American scientists. The tomato tastes just like a red tomato and also smells the same. The difference is the color, but the purple tomato is also said to be good for health.
These are purple pigments, which offer many health benefits. You also see these pigments in, for example, blueberries, blackberries and aubergines.
“It contains a lot of antioxidants”, British research leader and biochemist Cathie Martin tells CNN. “The studies after producing this tomato are impressive. For example, mice that had a high risk of cancer lived about 30 percent longer after eating the purple tomatoes than the cancer-prone mice that ate the normal red tomatoes.”
The researchers are also pleased that the tomato has a distinctly different color than the well-known red, green and yellow tomatoes. “It gives the consumer a clear choice.”
First regulator approves tomato
Supervisor APHIS of the US Department of Agriculture sees no health disadvantages to the purple tomato. The service has therefore approved the tomato.
Now the US food and medicine watchdog FDA has yet to approve the purple tomato. Then the market research begins.
The scientists are optimistic. “Consumers are always a little wary of genetically modified food. But we see that in recent years they are open to change. It’s time to adapt food to get optimal health benefits from it.”
The purple tomato should be on American shelves in early 2023.
