If you miss the picture quality of 4K Blu-rays in the midst of the streaming war, think of a new Bravia TV.
Sony’s brand new streaming service, Bravia Core, is attacking in near 4K Blu-ray quality – but so far only on Bravia XR TVs. The feature will be pre-installed on all new Bravia XR models, and both fresh (e.g. Spider-Man: Away, Jumanji: The Next Level) and classic titles will be in your catalog.
With Pure Stream technology, the company promises an “near lossless UDH Blu-ray equivalent” 80 Mbps stream – the latter number is 3-4 times the bandwidth available on Netflix, but it also doubles on Apple TV (of course remember that only on a theoretical level).
So the Bravia Core will be pre-installed on the recently announced Bravia XR models (Master Series Z9J, Master Series A90J and A80J, and X95J and X90J) with an updated processor and nicer display, depending on how many movies you get enough credit to get started – it it is not yet known how long the films redeemed from it will become available in this way.
It also appears that Bravia Core doesn’t necessarily compete in the Netflix and others category to plan to launch with a minimum of 300 titles, nor do they include their own productions, but Sony claims to be making the “largest IMAX Enhanced” offering on the market.
So as a target group, they have certainly shot movie lovers who are disappointed with the currently available stream quality, but we can still talk about a rather narrow group just because of the hardware stipulation.
