With the redesigned exterior, better sound quality and noise reduction, the latest piece in the Japanese award-winning 1000X series has arrived.
Sony has updated the 1000X series, which is the top category in their Bluetooth headphones. The WH-1000XM5 will be available in two colors, matte black and matte cream (silver), back in late May 2022. The design has changed, now the 250 gram headphones cannot be folded like their predecessors, so the carrying case has also been redesigned. The earcups have synthetic leather ear cushions, the slider used to adjust the size is stepless, and the headband is slimmer than its predecessors. Inside, the wear sensor (proximity sensor) in the WH-1000XM4 has disappeared, more precisely moved under the fabric cover. The headphones still have USB-C for charging, the 3.5 mm audio connector remains, can be controlled via a touchpad, but there is a physical button left to turn on and activate active noise cancellation and pass-through mode. Google Now and Amazon Alexa are now available with a voice command, so the button that wakes them up says goodbye.
There are eight microphones, twice as many as the predecessor. Active noise cancellation uses all eight, so the new headphones are said to be able to capture higher-frequency sounds better than their predecessors. The device can now automatically adjust noise filtering to suit the headphone environment without having to run the Sony NC Optimizer separately. The already known QN1 HD processor is responsible for noise reduction, but this is complemented by the V1 processor introduced in the WF-1000XM4.
Sound is generated by a new 30mm drive that helps reduce noise with soft edges and a lighter and rigid carbon fiber composite dome for better high-frequency sensitivity for a more natural sound. Sony uses the same lead-free, gold-containing solder in the headphones as it does in the A100 Walkman music player, helping for even power distribution and better signal-to-noise ratio. Of course, Hi-Res support is also wired and using the LDAC codec wirelessly. Lower quality compressed files are repaired in real time by DSEE Extreme, upscaling can dynamically detect instrumentation, genres, or individual elements of songs, and recovers the high range lost during compression. The impedance is 48 ohms, the frequency transmission on the cable is between 4 and 40,000 Hz, over Bluetooth 5.2 with 44.1 kHz sampling between 20 and 20,000 Hz, using LDAC with 96 kHz sampling between 20 and 40,000 Hz. The 1000XM5 has a sensitivity of 102 dB / mW. With 360-degree surround sound left over from its predecessor, the new headphones can also deliver Dolby Atmos sound when connected to a Sony Bravia XR TV with a WLA-NS7 wireless transmitter.
Microphone distribution has changed and voice quality has improved. There are two beam-shaping microphones for each of the right and left handsets, aided by Sony’s artificial intelligence-based noise filtering to keep the headphone wearer’s voice away from background noise and to avoid interference from wind noise. Microphones and AI work even if someone is using transparent mode to let in sounds from the outside world.
There’s a quick pairing with Android and Windows, and a Bluetooth multipoint is also provided, but LDAC has to be sacrificed for simultaneous use with the two devices. From Android and iOS phones, you can use the Sony Headphones app to control headphones, calibrate EQ, and personalize smart features.
The operating time has not changed, Sony still guarantees 30 hours of ANC music playback, 40 hours without ANC. Charging, on the other hand, has changed, with every USB PD charger now enough to charge your headphones for 10 minutes to play five hours of music. Those who would use the device for conferences and telephone calls can expect 24 hours of operation with ANC and 32 hours without ANC. By the way, the charging cable is provided by the manufacturer here, unlike its phones, and the 1.2-meter gold-plated headphone cable is included, but the adapter for aircraft systems, which was included with the headphones in previous years, is omitted. The packaging, on the other hand, follows the new direction, ie it receives the WH-1000XM5 in a compostable, plastic-free box.
For the time being, the Hungarian representation has only stated that the device will be available in Hungary from the end of May, and no price could be announced. In the United States and the United Kingdom, the price of headphones has risen compared to the previous generation, with the US receiving the device for $ 399 and the UK for £ 380, so we can expect prices of around 145 and 175 thousand forints at home.
