Somnium Space partners with Vrgineers and Prusa Research

Somnium Spaceone of the leading immersive metaverses, partners with the leader in next-generation virtual and mixed reality pilot training systems, the company Vrgineersa výrobcem 3D tiskáren Prusa Research, to further strengthen the development of a new high-end open-source VR headset. It works both in the mode of wired connection with the computer and as a separate unit.

This new VR headset aims to change the current restrictive direction of the VR device market, which is promoted by big companies like Meta (originally Facebook). In response to the currently extended restrictions, the Somnium VR One headset will instead be built on the most open platform possible. Somnium VR One aims to provide a superior immersive experience, both in wired and wireless mode. The final version will be powered by the Android operating system and the headset will be able to be used indefinitely for commercial purposes as well. Thanks to the fact that the source codes will be open and available, it will be a great solution for the commercial sphere as well.
Every user should have the right to fully own the purchased hardware, and at the same time have the opportunity to modify, improve or repair the purchased device. 3D models of individual parts of the headset can be downloaded from the Internet, so anyone with access to a 3D printer can easily make them. The source codes for the Android operating system will be available in a public repository.
Anyone will be able to download a 3D model of the Somnium Space headset from and print the parts at home on their printer.
To optimize production costs, electronic components and proprietary lenses will be mass-produced in cooperation with Vrgineers, and will be available for sale on the Somnium Space website. It will therefore be possible to buy these components, print the plastic parts on a 3D printer and build the headset at home. Of course, a fully assembled version will also be on sale.
The production background of the entire project rests on the firm foundations of Vrgineers, which has deep technical knowledge associated with the production of professional headsets for virtual and mixed reality. The project is backed by direct investments from Somnium Space and Prusa Research in Vrgineers.
