Some BMW models will no longer come with a touchscreen (with video)

The global semiconductor crisis has led BMW to deliver some models without touch screens to the infotainment system.

The Bavarian manufacturer has taken this drastic measure to reduce silicon consumption and to maintain current production levels as there are limited stocks for the necessary components.

Thus, BMW representatives announced that they will temporarily eliminate touchscreens from several models, namely 3 Series, 4 Series, Z4, and X5, X6 and X7 SUV models.

The alternative solution to the tactical screen is an improved version of the classic “iDrive” controller (see video), which is mounted on the center console and is found on previous models. Although the control of the interface is more difficult, customers opt for this option on the principle “than not at all, better that way”.

Backup Assistant also disappears

While the Bavarian manufacturer BMW has given up the touchscreen, other major manufacturers are giving up other systems or functions. Thus, the General Motors have eliminated from their models the start / stop function, wireless charging or the hands-free driving system called “Super Cruise”.

As he informs Autoblog, another function that will disappear from the mentioned models is the “Backup Assistant” function, a component of the optional “Parking Assistant” package. With this function, BMW cars park with their backs to themselves.

Customers who have already ordered these cars will receive a voucher worth 500 euros, an amount that will not cover, however, a possible subsequent installation of a touch screen when it is available again.
