Smoke on the ISS nearly derailed the spacewalk

9th of September an emergency occurred on the ISS… An automatic air test alarm has triggered, detecting harmful substances and impurities. Astronauts and astronauts smelled smoke in several segments of the station. Several modules were threatened at once.

Our cosmonaut – flight engineer Oleg Novitsky raised the alarm. At about five in the morning Moscow time, when the ISS is on the night schedule, he called the MCC on communication and said that he saw smoke, felt its smell. An alarm has been triggered on the Zvezda module. The smoke from the Russian segment was drawn into the American one.

Oleg Novitsky and Petr Dubrov opened panels in the smoke detection area and examined the space behind them. No source of smoke was found. After that, the astronauts turned on the filter to clean the station’s atmosphere from harmful impurities. Acting according to the instructions, the emergency was averted.

This incident almost disrupted the planned work in open space to integrate the new module “Science” into the ISS. The Russian cosmonauts had a very difficult and responsible program planned.

Novitsky and Dubrov began extravehicular activities at 17:55 Moscow time on Thursday. They spent 7 hours and 20 minutes in open space, completing all the main and two additional tasks.

The cosmonauts examined the antennas of the Progress MS-17 cargo vehicle. This made it possible to make sure that the antennas of the Kurs rendezvous system were not damaged. Also Novitsky and Dubrov successfully connected an Ethernet LAN cable, reports TASS.
