The slightly increased welfare density in 2020 is entirely due to men. In this group, the social assistance density increased from 23.6 in 2019 to 24.4, while for women there was a decrease from 31.6 to 31.5 in 2020.
At the reference moment at the end of June 2020, in eight Dutch municipalities there were at least fifty welfare recipients per thousand inhabitants.
In addition to the major cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague, these were Arnhem, Enschede, Groningen, Heerlen and Leeuwarden. The social assistance density was the highest with 68 social assistance recipients per 1,000 inhabitants in Rotterdam.
