Skoda is reducing production by the end of the year

Skoda will “significantly reduce or even suspend” production from October 18 to the end of the year due to the global shortage of chips affecting the automotive sector.

“Even Škoda Auto cannot avoid this global crisis,” said a spokesman for the Czech company, Thomas Kotter. The current reductions in car production are the largest in Central Europe so far, and economists believe that this will affect the entire Czech economy.

Škoda, which operates as part of the German Volkswagen, is the largest Czech exporter. This brand has already accumulated tens of thousands of cars that have been assembled but are waiting for chips. Showrooms compile lists of customers who will wait for months for their cars.

Kotera said that Škoda wants to focus on completing the almost completed cars as soon as possible, so that customers can pick them up.

Due to this reduction, Škoda will probably make a similar number of cars this year as last year, ie about 1.15 million vehicles, the Czech Association of Car Manufacturers announced. Earlier, production was expected to reach 1.3 million cars.

In addition to Škoda, which previously stopped production at the end of September, Toyota also faced problems at the factory in Kolin, Czech Republic, last month.

In Hungary, where the factories have Mercedes-Benz and Suzuki, car production also had to be reduced, and production fell in Germany as well.
