The Gimpo Geomdan Transportation Citizens’ Solidarity, a civic group, held a rally at three parks in the Gimpo area of Gyeonggi Province on the 5th and urged the extension of Gimpo and Geomdan of Seoul Subway Line 5 and the direct result of the Gangnam Express Railway (GTX) Line D.
This afternoon, the group held a candlelight festival in three places: Janggi-dong Hangang Central Park, Pungmu-dong Birdcage Park, and Masan-dong Lake Park.
Each member of the group held a candle while wearing a red headband with the phrase ‘Buseon Kim OUT’ written on it.
Co-Chairman Kang Hyung-koo said, “We are not asking for the Eunha Railroad 999 to be released. We are asking for two or three railway lines directly connected to Seoul, each entering six to seven other areas.”
Then, he asked, “Why is it that local selfishness is asking you to get out of this place,” saying, “pregnant women are suffering and the elderly are groaning from the two-pack ‘Hell-Chul’ (Gimpo Gold Line).”
In addition to Gimpo Mayor Jeong Ha-young, Gimpo City Council Chairman Shin Myeong-soon, Gimpo district lawmakers belonging to the Democratic Party of Korea and People’s Power, Gyeonggi-do lawmakers, and Gimpo city councilors also participated.
Citizens of Gimpo and Geomdan protested against the government’s GTX-D route plan and started candlelight vigils and vehicle demonstrations from the beginning of last month, and recently even had a shaved head.
According to the 4th national rail network construction plan announced by the Korea Transport Research Institute on April 22, the GTX-D route was found to connect Gimpo Janggi and Bucheon Sports Complex.
This is significantly reduced compared to the demands of Gyeonggi-do or Incheon, which wanted the GTX-D route to be directly connected to Gangnam, Seoul, and residents in the western region are protesting the route by calling it the ‘Kimbu Line’.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to finalize and announce the 4th national railway network construction plan within this month after collecting opinions.
